'Captain America: The First Avenger' Writers Talk Sequel Timeline
Even before movie audiences get see Steve Rogers injected with a super serum and become Captain America, Marvel Studios already has writers working on his next adventure. Stephen McFeely & Christopher Markus, who wrote the upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger, are currently working on a script to a sequel that will take place after audiences have seen Thor, The First Avenger, Joss Whedon's The Avengers and Shane Black's Iron Man 3. However, according to a recent interview, that doesn't necessarily mean the story will take place in modern times. It could take place during World War II. Read the quotes after the break.
McFeely and Markus spoke to MTV Splash Page about their work on the sequel and had a ton to say about their thought process, which is still in the very early stages Here's Markus:
We're very early, still. This is the fun part — when we can say, "Hey, we can do this!" and everyone says, "Yeah!" No one says anything negative at this point in the process. We have a million great ideas and haven't thrown any of them out yet. That being said, it's sort of a weirdly huge opportunity for storytelling in that you know modern Cap through the Avengers at that point, and just by the nature of what we were talking about before, there's going to be a lot of his World War II history we haven't shown. We're going to have two entire timelines to play with.
And here's McFeely's tag on that statement:
I wonder if the reaction to ["The First Avenger"] will steer us in some way. First, if it does well... Then, if it does well and people embrace the World War II aspect of it, maybe there's pressure to return there in a large way. But if they don't embrace that aspect and just love Chris Evans as Steve, maybe there's less pressure to do that — you can just keep him in the Avengers universe.
It's a very interesting dilemma to have, having to write a movie that's a sequel to both your movie, a second movie that's not yours, and has to fit in with several other different films. But, as the pair say in their interview, the first people to really have that problem with be Shane Black and Drew Pierce, who are working on Iron Man 3, which will be Marvel's first post-Avengers film.
Would you like to see Captain America in the past again or in the present? Or would you prefer to see the first film before figuring that out?
