Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby' Might Be 3D; Michael Mann Considering 3D Too

In the coming years, someone is going to write a really interesting book about this new evolution of 3D complete with the highs, the lows and the creamy middles. And while the 2010 chapter certainly had some lows – Clash of the Titans, The Last Airbender – 2011 looks like it could easily turn the page. We already know we'll see our first Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese 3D films this year and now two more well-respected filmmakers could be throwing their hat in the three-dimensional ring.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week, director Baz Luhrmann revealed that while a final decision has yet to be made, he has workshopped shooting his upcoming Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby in 3D. And Michael Mann revealed that he'd like to shoot a "pure dialogue drama" in 3D as well. Luhrmann, Mann and fellow director Oliver Stone all spoke on a panel at the annual tech convention about the Blu-ray format. For example, Mann said that "Blu-ray is the premier format to reproduce the decisions we make. It is probably going to sustain itself as the premiere format." And Stone was extremely honest and forward thinking in saying that ""I find it sad, we are the last of the Mohicans, in way. I'm not knocking the future ... but this is the last hardware, then it is going to be on a computer. But you will never hold it in your hand, like a book."

In regard to 3D, Stone didn't announce that he'd be working in the format, just that filmmakers shouldn't shoot 3D "unless you can afford it." "Otherwise you are putting yourself under enormous pressure," he said.

The other two directors perhaps have more budget leeway and always put themselves under enormous pressure to begin with. So maybe that's why they're both considering 3D.

In speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Luhrmann revealed "he has workshopped his upcoming project The Great Gatsby in 3D, though he has not made a call about whether to shoot in the format."

And thanks to Bleeding Cool for pointing out that, in a below clip from the event, Mann said the following:

I would probably shoot... just a pure dialogue drama I would shoot in 3D.

Of course, neither of these quotes writes anything in stone about Mann or Luhrmann shooting in 3D. It makes total sense that Luhrmann, whose visuals are always eye-popping, has at least looked into it and if Mann decides to shoot 3D, it won't be for a while. He's working on Luck for HBO though he's supposedly already cast Capa.
