Bruce Campbell Says 'Bruce Vs. Frankenstein' Will Be "'The Expendables' Of Horror"
Beloved B-movie actor/God Bruce Campbell is making a sequel to My Name is Bruce. To many that decision may seem odd, considering that not even diehard fans of 'The Chin' were terribly blown away by the first film, and Campbell has been scrupulous enough in his project undertakings that he passed on a sequel to Bubba Ho-tep, but after reading his description of the sequel, entitled Bruce Vs. Frankenstein, I can see why he's insistent on making the film.
In an interview with Hero Complex, Campbell was asked about a comparison he made of the film to The Expendables, and he was happy to elaborate:
Yeah, [it's] "The Expendables," or more like the "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" of horror. I want to get so many horror movie stars that people can't possibly not see the movie. I want to give them other stuff to do. I want to have Kane Hodder be very particular about what he eats. I want Robert Englund to be a tough guy, like he knows tae kwon do or something. I want to find out the hidden sides of all these people. Some will play themselves, some will play alternate characters as well. I may approach Kane Hodder to play Frankenstein. He could be Kane Hodder himself fighting himself as Frankenstein. It could be crazy. It's a silly concocted story that we hope to do maybe in a year or so. My breaks between "Burn Notice" have been getting tighter because they've been adding episodes. They're trying to trap me like a rat in the TV world, and I might just let them. There's a script, it just kind of blows right now, so no one's really seeing it. We gotta work on it. Definitely shoot in Oregon all on a stage. It's like the "300? of horror comedies. We want to make it a whole world. Someone's gotta take Frank down for good.
Some amusing ideas, but that's all they are for the time being. Campbell was pretty forthright about the script needing work, so I'll refrain from getting excited just yet. Last time I was amped up for a Campbell project, it was My Name is Bruce—which had equally as cool of an idea behind it—and the trailer put me off that film so intensely that I still haven't been able to bring myself to watch it. Could the sequel really be that significant of a departure?
There does appear to be a considerable difference in the way they're approaching this movie than they did My Name is Bruce, in that it's not just meant for Bruce Campbell fans. Over at Shock Till You Drop, producer Mike Richardson described the first film as being made "for the fans and for a specific fan, the Bruce fans," but from the sounds of it, Campbell wants Bruce Vs. Frankenstein to be just as much for the fans of the actors behind everyone's favorite horror icons, widening its appeal quite a bit.
In that same interview, Richardson explained the basic outline of the plot as it stands right now:
We have an idea where [Bruce] is going to visit a country in Europe and he thinks he's got an all-expense-paid stay there. They put him up in a big castle and he thinks there are groupies running around, but they're not really groupies, they're minions. It's Bruce and he's going to play the same clueless character.
For those that haven't yet seen the trailer for My Name is Bruce and are in the mood to cringe, I've included it below.
