Despicable Me Sequel In Development
Illumination Entertainment's first feature Despicable Me earned 56.3 million domestically in its first weekend of release, nearly double what analysts had predicted. It seems like everyone got lured to the theater to catch a glimpse of those cute little yellow minions. Of course, a sequel is already in development.
Mike Fleming reports that a sequel already in the works: "Despicable Me 2 talks are already underway among the studio, Chris Meledandri, and writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio." Also, the studio is already making two short films featuring the Minions. I'm guessing the shorts will be attached to future Illumination Entertainment releases like Hop and The Lorax, and Ricky Gervais' Flanimals. Illumination is also in the early stages of development on a Where's Waldo movie and a Tim Burton-helmed adaptation of The Addams Family, based on the original drawings from Charles Addams.
But where do you go with a Despicable Me sequel? It seems to me that audiences were most taken with the minions and Gru's evil plots. And now that Gru might be somewhat reformed, the character becomes a lot less interesting. I would propose that Illumination look into creating a prequel showing how Gru came to find The Minions, and revolve the story around the small yellow creatures.
