Stop-Motion Addams Family Movie Still Moving Forward With Tim Burton In Mind To Direct

In March, a story came out of Deadline that a stop-motion animated Addams Family film is being developed with Tim Burton as likely director. Burton's reps quickly issued a denial, saying that he "has not lined up any of his upcoming projects." When Brendon reported on the story and the denial, he surmised that Deadline's report wasn't incorrect, but that this project might just be a long ways off.

Now there is support for that idea, which comes from one of the film's producers, Christopher Meledandri. He says the film is indeed being developed, but that it is in the early stages. And yes, Tim Burton is the director he has in mind.

ComingSoon spoke to Meledandri, who said,

It's all very, very early, but we are developing with [Tim Burton directing] in mind...We're just now at the story phase. Stuff has been written as though we are doing it in black and white, but that's not correct. It's not incorrect, but it's not correct. We haven't gotten to that point.

Lot of maybes in there, but there always will be when a film like this is in the early stages. Sounds like black and white, which would honor the style of Charles Addams' comics, would be an ideal choice, but it's not difficult to guess that the studio would balk on that front.

Black and white or no (yeah, b&w would be perfect, no question) I'm quite interested to see the character designs that might come of this. Doing the film in stop motion will allow the producers and director, whoever that might be, to remain very faithful to the idiosyncratic characters created by Addams. The Barry Sonnenfeld films did an admirable job of translating Addams' creations to live-action, but stop-motion could be magical.

And if the producers are at the story stage, does that mean that a writer has been hired? If so, love to know who that might be.
