Jeffrey Dean Morgan Joins Red Dawn, Angles For Lobo
Jeffrey Dean Morgan is one of those actors who always seems on the cusp of really breaking out. His roles on Supernatural and Grey's Anatomy led to a turn as The Comedian in Watchmen, in which he was one of the highlights. He's currently shooting the Sylvain White-directed The Losers alongside Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba and Jason Patric. And now he'll be in the remake of Red Dawn.
Speaking to Collider when the site was amongst the crew at the not-so-secret set visit to The Losers, Morgan said he was taking the Powers Boothe role in the Red Dawn remake. Not a huge role, but a significant one. The news was later confirmed (or simply picked up, depending on your view) by Variety. The trade says Morgan will be "the leader of the U.S. Special Forces team who discovers the teens' stronghold while behind enemy lines." In the original, Boothe played a pilot who was shot down, and ended up explaining how the Soviet invasion of the US had been progressing, before lending his expertise to the resistance fighter heroes of the movie. Morgan actually looks quite a bit like the young Boothe – check the screenshot below, from the Red Dawn trailer. Red Dawn will be shot in and around Detroit.
But two comic adaptations in a row evidently isn't enough for Morgan, who offered up to Collider that he'd like to play Lobo in the upcoming Joel Silver / Guy Ritchie production. Not a huge surprise, as Silver is also behind The Losers, so it's likely he and Morgan have spoken about the picture.
You know, they're making "Lobo" right now. That would be cool. "Lobo" would be very cool. I don't think that I'm as big as Lobo is, but if you could, like, transplant Mickey Rourke's body on my head, that would be just great.
After his work as the Comedian, it's not too difficult to see the actor as Lobo, inasmuch as I can see anyone tackling the role. Honestly, it's a character that seems better suited for the page than screen, especially if offered up in a 'rope in the teens'-friendly rating.
