Winona Ryder Promises A Heathers Sequel... Again
Talking to Empire magazine for their new, 201st issue, Winona Ryder has once again jumped onto the topic of a Heathers sequel. For years she's been promising one, but for years Michael Lehman and Daniel Waters, the director and writer of the original, have been hemming and hawing. While not calling her crazy, sending out the message that, actually, this sequel is probably never going to happen. But Ms. Ryder maintains that Heathers 2 is not only coming, but that it is actively being developed. Judge her comments for yourself with the quote barrage after the jump.
So, here's a whole raft of her comments on Heathers, on Lehman and Waters, and on just how Christian Slater will be coming back:
One day on set we were trying to come up with tag lines for the poster and I remember one of them was something like "Sex! Death! Power! Heathers – The Last Teen Movie". We did a documentary for the 15th anniversary DVD, and they interviewed me and took something I said out of context. They asked me about John Hughes' movies and said I couldn't stand them. I didn't mean that. I like his movies because they're entertaining. But they're so full of stereotypes. And everyone around me thought High School was exactly like that. Maybe it was for some people, but it wasn't for me. For me, it was a lot darker.
We got a lot of shit for it. When Christian and I promoted it by speaking at schools and colleges there were so many angry people telling us how irresponsible we were. I remember when Columbine happened. The day after, the front cover of USA Today had a picture of me and Christian holding guns. It was so hurtful.
Whatever you hear there is a sequel in the works, I swear to God. But for some reason Dan and Michael don't want to talk about it. I've been wanting to do a sequel forever. There is a story, and Christian has agreed to come back as a kind of Obi-Wan character.
Screenwriter Daniel Waters has spoken several times in the past about the possibility of another Heathers. At some point, and indeed possibly in this current draft that Winona believes in, the story was going to be relocated to government. When speaking on the Creative Screenwriting Magazine podcast last year, however, Waters did make a joke that he often promises a sequel to Winona just to stop her hassling him.
I'm definitely behind a Heathers sequel 100% as long as Dan Waters is writing it. Indeed, I don't much care what it is he's scripting, if he's scripting, I want to see it. His contributions to Demolition Man and Hudson Hawk are truly wonderful, idiosyncratic and wildly esoteric stuff and his unproduced screenplay A Model Daughter is another Heathers-scale masterpiece waiting to happen.
Here's where I tell you that I don't think any other screenplay has impressed me as much as Heathers did. To this day it's still the script I'd give my special rosette to. Now, here's where you debate that.
