Lili Reinhart's 112-Minute Rom-Com Is Officially Prime Video's Biggest Streaming Hit

In a development that should come as a surprise to absolutely nobody, Prime Video's "The Love Hypothesis" is a hit. Indeed, long before this movie debuted, it was basically a foregone conclusion that romantic comedy fans would lap it up, and the hypothesis has since been proven. As such, the film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood's book has now found its way into the hearts of viewers worldwide ... and, of course, to the top of the Prime Video streaming charts.

"The Love Hypothesis" is one of an increasing number of movies that started as fan fiction, with Hollywood tapping into BookTok's insatiable appetite for stories about two hot people doing it. In this particular instance, however, the Prime Video romantic comedy had "Star Wars" fans spiraling due to the fact that Hazelwood's story began as fan fiction involving a romance between the characters Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) from the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy. Fittingly enough, actor Tom Bateman, who's married to Ridley in real life, was cast in the "Love Hypothesis" film adaptation to boot.

Lili Reinhart plays Olive Smith in "The Love Hypothesis" opposite Bateman as Dr. Adam Carlsen. She's an attractive young biology PhD candidate, he's a closed-off tyrant of a professor who also happens to be hot. There's some sort of justification for them entering into a fake relationship, naturally, which in and of itself is just a justification to see these hot people doing romantic stuff. Boom, massive hit. Sure enough, according to FlixPatrol, "The Love Hypothesis" is already on its way to becoming a global streaming phenomenon.

"The Love Hypothesis" hit Prime Video on September 23, 2026, and it topped the streamer's movie charts worldwide the day after. We're talking number one in 49 countries, representing an almost perfect record for the rom-com. The only country where the movie ranks lower is Turkey, which, for some reason, wasn't quite as taken with Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman's romantic hijinks. Even then, the film still hit number three, which means, at the time of writing, it's charting in 50 countries.

Such a strong performance has allowed "The Love Hypothesis" to enter the overall charts, too. As of September 24, 206, the movie charmed its way into Prime Video's overall rankings (which combine movies and TV shows) in 29 countries, even hitting number one in seven of them. It's currently at number three in the United States overall charts (and, unsurprisingly, number one on the U.S. movie charts), but it's still early days for this love affair between Prime Video viewers and "The Love Hypothesis." No doubt, the relationship will continue to bloom as the week goes on.

None of this should come as a shock to anyone. Again, romance is big business in 2026, especially when it involves two hot people crossing some sort of line to be together. (We recently saw a student and professor get together in Netflix's "My Oxford Year" as well.) What's more, the success of "The Love Hypothesis" comes in the wake of Ester Expósito's Prime Video chart-topper "Drawn Together," a film that, wouldn't you know it, features a couple who cross a professional boundary to have sex and stuff. The formula just works, and this won't be the last time Prime Video, or any other streamer, puts it to the test.
