2020 BAFTA Winners: Surprising No One, '1917' And Director Sam Mendes Come Out On Top

Our friends across the pond have handed out their equivalent of the Academy Awards with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards, or the BAFTAs. Since these are British-centric awards, more love is typically given to movies made by U.K. filmmakers, so it should come as no surprise that 1917 and director Sam Mendes walked away with Best Film and Best Director, as well as Outstanding British film, and a handful of other awards too. The BAFTA organization was heavily criticized, both by the media and by members of the group itself, for having an overwhelmingly white field of nominees, despite the diverse pool of talent eligible for awards. That's something that even the winners weren't very pleased with, and Joaquin Phoenix, who won the leading actor award for his performance in Joker, specifically called attention to this issue during his acceptance speech.
