The Best TV Shows And Movies Coming To Netflix In October 2024

::Oscar Isaac voice:: Somehow, fall returned. Yes, believe it or not, summer is over, and we're officially in the midst of autumn. While it's sad to see summer go, fall is a pretty swell time of year (in fact, if you ask me, it's the best season). Fall means it's time to embrace spooky season, and sure enough, the folks at Netflix are unleashing some scary movies as the calendar rolls over into October. Below, I've highlighted five horror-centric films that will debut on Netflix in October. You'll also get a complete list of every movie and TV show hitting Netflix in October, as well as every TV show and movie that will be leaving the streaming service before the month is out. So let's get to it!

"It's What's Inside" premiered earlier this year at Sundance, and garnered rave reviews (you can read ours here). However, the majority of those reviews went to great lengths to keep most of the film's events a secret. From these reviews, one could learn that "It's What's Inside" is about a group of friends who reunite for a big pre-wedding party, and ... something ... goes wrong. Beyond that, though, the film was shrouded in mystery. Perhaps realizing that keeping things secret was folly, Netflix, who bought the movie for a huge sum of money, decided to give some of the game away when they released the first "It's What's Inside" trailer earlier this month. 

As it turns out, "It's What's Inside" is about swapping bodies! As the trailer reveals, a group of friends are presented with the chance to put their minds into another person's body with the help of a mysterious device. This leads to all sorts of wild complications. I've seen the film, and I won't dare spoil anything else that happens. But I will tell you that "It's What's Inside" lives up to the hype — it's one of the best movies of the year, primarily because writer-director Greg Jardin overloads the movie with style. The film has an almost manic energy that's hard to resist, and I hope it finds an audience when it drops on Netflix October 4. 

I feel like the mood on David Gordon Green's "Halloween" reboot trilogy has soured, but you know what? I'm still a fan — of all three films. Yes, I even think "Halloween Ends" is good! But I do think that even if you most people don't care for the two follow-up films, "Halloween Kills" and "Halloween Ends," the consensus is that the first entry, 2018's "Halloween," is pretty darn good. For this film, Green's movie takes the bold approach of saying that none of the "Halloween" sequels happened. The only other film that exists in this universe is John Carpenter's 1978 classic. 

The 2018 "Halloween" suggests that in the years since that film happened, notorious killer Michael Myers has been locked away in an insane asylum, and his one surviving victim, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) has become something of a reclusive survivalist nut, just waiting for the day Michael comes for her again. Sure enough, Michael escapes and begins a killing spree — although interestingly enough, he seemingly has no interest in Laurie, at least at first. Green's film is all about how horror begets trauma, and it also works hard to make Michael scary again — like in the original film, he's an almost unstoppable force of pure evil here. 

"Unfriended" is a "screenlife" movie, which means all the action takes place on a computer screen. On paper, this idea sounds terrible. And yet, "Unfriended" is a surprisingly effective horror flick about some very online teens being tormented by a supernatural force. When a group of friends gather together online, they soon find they're not alone — and they suspect the ghost of a recently dead classmate is involved. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way, but what makes "Unfriended" work is that it feels authentic. You get sucked into the film's online visual style, primarily because it's what so many of us are used to seeing on a daily basis (minus the ghosts). 

Hey, have you heard of this Alfred Hitchcock guy? He's pretty good! But seriously folks, there's a reason Hitchcock is so revered: he made some fantastic films. "The Birds," released in 1963, is one of the best of the best — an eerie horror movie about, you guessed it, birds! In the film, sexy socialite Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) has the hots for a lawyer named Mitch (Rod Taylor), and decides to more or less stalk him back to his home in Bodega Bay, California. But once Melanie is in town, things start to go awry, mainly due to sudden strange behavior of birds. Without warning, birds begin attacking folks and causing havoc. Why is this happening? Does it all have something to do with Melanie? Is it just a case of nature run amuck? "The Birds" never gives us an answer, and that's part of what makes the movie so effective. Hitchcock employs brilliant film techniques and unconventional editing to draw us into the film, which has no musical score save for the sounds of birds. 

"The Birds" isn't the only Hitchcock classic coming to Netflix in October! Hitchcock's "Psycho," the film that arguably gave birth to the slasher genre, will also be streaming. After the glitz and glamor of his big budget thriller "North by Northwest," Hitchcock worked with a much smaller budget to make the stripped-down "Psycho," adapted from the book by Robert Bloch. The end result: a horror movie classic, and probably the film most people think of when they think Hitchcock. You know the story: totally normal guy Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) runs a nice little hotel and gets along well with his beloved mother.
