The Best TV Shows And Movies Coming To Netflix In March 2024
After two slow-as-molasses months, things are about to heat up at the 2024 box office in March. Fortunately, for those more inclined to stay home as we wait out the final weeks of winter, there are plenty of alternative options for your entertainment fix to choose from on Netflix. In addition to its usual smattering of kids' shows, international releases, and comedy specials, the streamer will unveil intriguing new projects starring the likes of Millie Bobby Brown (never fear, she and the rest of the "Stranger Things" cast are hard at work shooting season 5 as we speak) and Regina King, along with some endeavors that could only exist on Netflix.
Don't believe me? There's a South Korean comedy series about a woman being turned into a chicken nugget (called, well, "Chicken Nugget") that's written and directed by Lee Byeong-heon, whose 2019 action-comedy "Extreme Job" was the highest-grossing movie in South Korea at the time of its release. Has the streamer found the next "Squid Game" already, or is this one destined to remain a roundly niche offering? Time will tell, but in the meantime, here are our top picks for the latest Netflix arrivals, along with everything else making it way onto the service in March.
Spaceman
When you hear the description "Adam Sandler astronaut movie," you're more likely to imagine something like the Disney comedy "RocketMan" (farting-in-a-spacesuit jokes and all) than "Solaris" or "Moon." Yet, all signs point to director Johan Renck's "Spaceman" having more in common with those films than any of the Sandman's Happy Madison productions, down to their examinations of the complexities of human relationships, the endless dangers of space travel, and the effects of isolation on our fragile minds. There's also a human-sized extraterrestrial spider voiced by Paul Dano in this movie, so those with an extreme case of arachnophobia (or Danophobia, aka a condition in which you spend the entire time dreading Paul Dano is about to get beaten up while watching one of his films) should consider themselves warned.
"Spaceman" sees Sandler playing Jakub Procházka, an astronaut who struggles to maintain his composure partway into a mission at the edge of the solar system, aware that his marriage to his wife back on Earth (Carey Mulligan) might be over by the time he returns. So, naturally, who else should he get help from than an ancient mysterious creature (Dano) who has been hiding out on his ship and seeks to work with him to make sense of his personal life before time runs out? Don't expect any hijinks with the Sandman speaking in an exaggerated non-American accent à la "You Don't Mess with the Zohan." This is shaping up to be a much more somber, yet equally wild, space odyssey.
Godzilla (2014)
Seeing as he's off to play with dinosaurs in the next "Jurassic World" film, let's talk about the first time Gareth Edwards directed a movie about a giant, stampeding reptilian creature. The filmmaker's "Godzilla" reboot will turn 10 later this year, yet it remains one of the most visually accomplished Hollywood tentpoles of the 21st century. Oh sure, the non-kaiju storyline here doesn't hold a candle to the one in "Godzilla Minus One," but what the film lacks in the human drama department, it makes up for with breathtaking sequences and set pieces that capture Godzilla and the MUTOs from a ground-level human perspective in all their terrifying glory. Also, in hindsight, it's not really shocking that "MUTOs" failed to stick and was eventually replaced by "Titans" in the subsequent MonsterVerse movies, is it?
The thing that Edwards excels at in all his films is scale, and it serves "Godzilla" well. Depicting the King of the Monsters as a true force of nature also supports the movie's core theme, which evolves Godzilla from a metaphor for the atomic bombing of Japan and its legacy into a broader allegory for the harm and destruction that humankind has wrought on our planet since WWII (starting with the creation of nuclear weapons). Recent entries in the MonsterVerse have moved away from this approach in favor of being bigger and far less serious kaiju free-for-alls, but that only makes Edwards' original installment all the more unique.
Love & Basketball
Valentine's Day might be behind us, but there's never a bad time to revisit or finally watch Gina Prince-Bythewood's classic sports romance "Love & Basketball." The 2000 drama follows two childhood sweethearts whose shared passion for basketball brings them closer together yet also proves to be a source of friction as they mature into young adults (played by Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps). Other factors both on and off the court further threaten to derail their dreams and ambitions (both personal and professional), in the process straining the pair's relationship and forcing them to decide what actually matters most to them.
Nearly a quarter-century after it misfired at the box office before transforming into something of a cult hit on the home market, Bythewood's Black love story remains remarkably thoughtful in the way it explores the pressures that come with being an athlete and how gender roles further complicate our dreams, on top of our own individual shortcomings. It's also a deeply sensitive and tender film that features one of the best — perhaps even the best — first-time sex scenes put to celluloid, among other intimate moments that illustrate the value of portraying the full range of human emotions and needs in your storytelling (physical desire included). If we're lucky, sports romances of this ilk might even be making a comeback in the foreseeable future.
Bodies Bodies Bodies
How do you poke fun at Generation Z without coming across as a bitter old person who probably complains about everything being "woke" nowadays and writes think pieces accusing Millennials of ruining everything in their spare time? Director Halina Reijn and writer Sarah DeLappe succeeded in doing just that with "Bodies Bodies Bodies," a horror-comedy in which a group mostly made up of well-to-do Gen-Zers party at a remote mansion in the middle of a hurricane, only for things to turn deadly during a round of the titular parlor game. It's basically "And Then There Were None," except the players are wealthy 20-something buffoons, save for one of their working-class girlfriends (Maria Bakalova) and Lee Pace as the type of skeevy Gen-Xer who would actually want to hang out with people half his age.
While its scares are proficient, it's the way "Bodies Bodies Bodies" sharply satirizes privileged young people who fancy themselves as being more enlightened than they really are that keeps the ship afloat. That and the on-point performances by talented folk like Amandla Stenberg, Myha'la Herrold, Chase Sui Wonders, Pete Davidson, and especially Rachel Sennott, who at one point delivers a line reading that has since become the stuff of social media legend. It feels a bit strange to recommend a film for its "bad" vibes, but that's precisely what "Bodies Bodies Bodies" serves up on a blood, drugs, and booze-splattered platter.
3 Body Problem
If David Benioff and D.B. Weiss' goal was to find a less ambitious and, ideally, controversy-free project to follow up their massive fantasy saga, then they've failed pretty miserably. The "Game of Thrones" showrunners threatened to play with fire by producing their alternate history series "Confederate" — a show that read as incredibly misguided on paper before it was abandoned — and toyed with the idea of making a Star War before setting their sights on a radically different sci-fi IP. "3 Body Problem" adapts author Liu Cixin's novel series "The Three-Body Problem," a work that even its fiercest defenders would admit seems downright impossible to translate into a visual medium at first glance. Even summarizing what it's about can be a bit tricky, as you can see from Netflix's somewhat vague official synopsis:
A young woman's fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity's history.
Co-developed by Alexander Woo ("True Blood") and starring the likes of Benedict Wong, Jess Hong, Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Eiza González, Alex Sharp, Jonathan Pryce, Rosalind Chao, Liam Cunningham, and Ben Schnetzer, "3 Body Problem" is the very definition of a big swing. Will it land? Benioff and Weiss have a, hmm, mixed track record when it comes to dense, challenging literary adaptations with huge ensembles, so all eyes will be on this one, waiting to see if it sinks or sails.
