The Best TV Shows And Movies Coming To Netflix In November 2023
It appears that we here at /Film are in collective agreement: November is the perfect month to catch up on all the spooky season stuff you didn't get around to in October. Great Thanksgiving films are few and far between (much as we all love it, you can only rewatch "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" so many times), and unless you're just really into the winter holidays, it's too early to start diving into your favorite films and series about Christmas, Hanukkah, you name it. Plus, this is also the time of year when studios begin marching out their awards contenders in droves, so you've got to make room for those as well.
Case in point: For years now, November has seen Netflix roll out its first wave of serious Oscar hopefuls, and 2023 will be very much business as usual in that respect. That's not to say it's all prestige offerings and biopics for the next four weeks. For example, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" fans will finally be able to stream that anime adaptation they've been hearing about, "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off," in the backend of the month. That's far from the only thing to look forward to, so let's stop puttering around and get into it already.
The Big Lebowski
25 years after "The Big Lebowski" opened in theaters to middling box office returns, it's hard to imagine a world where the film's now-classic quotes like "Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man" and "Shut the f**k up, Donny!" weren't common knowledge. The Coen Brothers' shaggy dog detective story by way of stoner comedy — itself an idiosyncratic homage to Raymond Chandler's hard-boiled crime novel "The Big Sleep" — casts Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski, a full-time slacker by day and casual bowler by night who gets caught up in a botched ransom scheme involving a millionaire who just so happens to share his last name. "The Dude" is the role Bridges was born to play, and he's basically been doing variations on his performance as the character ever since (for both good and bad). So why not go back to the source and ring in the film's quarter-centennial in style?
The Dude abides, after all.
Sly
Netflix's Arnold Schwarzenegger docuseries "Arnold" was, I admit, a little too glossy for my tastes, though it really comes alive in the moments where Arnie wrestles with his troubled history and personal failures. Memoirs that function as an act of therapy are always preferable to those that feel like an extended pat on the back, so I'm curious to see how the streamer's Sylvester Stallone doc, "Sly," fares by comparison. I can assure you, the irony — or, if not that, then the appropriateness — of these former action movie rivals turned real-life pals releasing competing Netflix documentaries in the same year isn't lost on me, either.
The official synopsis for "Sly" reads as follows: "For nearly 50 years Sylvester Stallone has entertained millions with iconic characters and blockbuster franchises, from 'Rocky' to 'Rambo' to 'The Expendables.' This retrospective documentary offers an intimate look at the Oscar-nominated actor-writer-director-producer, paralleling his inspirational underdog story with the indelible characters he has brought to life."
Insidious: The Red Door
My horror movie hot take of the day is that there are no flat-out bad "Insidious" films (which is to say, there are none that are completely devoid of merit). Even with its eye-rolling transphobic plot twist, "Insidious: Chapter 2" has the decency to at least take some interesting swings and not just rehash what its predecessor did. The fifth entry, "Insidious: The Red Door," sees series lead Patrick Wilson stepping behind the camera for the first time, and it, too, makes for a worthy addition to the franchise. To quote /Film's review by Chris Evangelista, Wilson "acquits himself nicely" as the movie's director, "especially in creating scenes that have a way of crawling under your skin."
Pulling double-duty, Wilson also stars in "The Red Door" as Josh Lambert, with his "Insidious" co-stars Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins reprising their respective roles as Josh's wife and son, Renai and Dalton. Having previously repressed their memories of the Further back in "Chapter 2," a now decade-older Josh and Dalton suddenly find themselves being haunted by the very literal demons of their past, forcing them to bring their darkest secrets into the light. What it lacks for innovation, "The Red Door" makes up for with steady execution (a scene involving an MRI machine is a franchise highlight) and its commitment to doing right by the Lambert family dynamic, bringing their story to a satisfying close. For now, anyway.
The Killer
The type of mid-budget adult drama David Fincher specializes in is a rare specimen in theaters these days, which has led to him working pretty much exclusively with Netflix since "Gone Girl" came out back in 2014. His latest collaboration with the streamer, "The Killer," casts Michael Fassbender as the titular assassin, who finds himself in a bit of trouble when a job doesn't go as expected. (And no, before any of you "Mindhunter" enthusiasts ask, I regret to inform you that this isn't secretly a much-hoped-for third installment in Fincher's acclaimed crime drama series.)
Adapted from the French graphic novel series by writer Alexis "Matz" Nolent and illustrator Luc Jacamon, "The Killer" reunites Fincher with his "Se7en" writer Andrew Kevin Walker for what early reviews have described as a polished, slow-burn thriller ... albeit one that coasts by more on "vibes" than doing anything that fresh or inventive. Still, we'll take whatever Fincher-ness we can get (especially a film that's already provided us with an objectively hilarious anecdote involving the director being understandably baffled by the excessive standing ovations that take place at film festivals).
Rustin
Remember what I said earlier about biopics? This year's batch includes "Rustin," a film about Bayard Rustin, one of the most pivotal members of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and a vital player in the organization of the March on Washington. Colman Domingo stars as the Black queer activist opposite an impressive cast that includes Aml Ameen as Martin Luther King Jr., Jeffrey Wright as Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Audra McDonald as Ella Baker, CCH Pounder as Anna Hedgeman, and Chris Rock as Roy Wilkins. The film itself comes from Oscar-winning "Milk" writer Dustin Lance Black and "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" director George C. Wolfe, so you just know Netflix sees this one as a potential awards magnet.
Fortunately, while early reviews suggest "Rustin" very much abides by the tried-and-true playbook for uplifting biopics, it also seems to have a little more substance than your average Oscar-baiting memoir. In his review for /Film, Barry Levitt noted the film looks "stiflingly cheap" at times and can feel "frustratingly formulaic," yet contains "flashes of brilliance" and is without question elevated by the reliably compelling Domingo. On those grounds alone, this one should be worth your time.
