The Best Movies And TV Shows Coming To Netflix In October 2023
Spooky season is officially upon us! Unless you're one of those sickos who decorated your house for Halloween weeks ago and have been watching horror films all throughout September (hi, it's me, I'm "sickos"), you're only just now getting into the spooky spirit. October will have plenty to offer, so far as your need for creepy entertainment goes. However, lest we forget, the movie industry's annual awards season is also underway, which means many of the titles that made a splash on the festival circuit back in September will be making their way onto streaming in the coming weeks. At the same time, those that flamed out during their festival showings (like "Pain Hustlers") will get a second shot at success as they roll their way onto Netflix.
So, let's get to it! Here are our top picks for new Netflix releases arriving in October 2023, along with everything else that's on its way to the streamer.
Dune (2021)
Thankfully, the Writers Guild of America strike has finally concluded with a pretty damn fine deal for the writers. While negotiations to end the actors strike are reportedly next on the agenda, they sadly didn't come soon enough to stop "Dune: Part Two" being booted from its original November 2023 release date to early 2024. So, why not fill the interim by watching or revisiting the first half of Denis Villeneuve's epic film adaptation of Frank Herbert's landmark sci-fi saga? While the director's original "Dune" movie might be faithful to a fault in capturing the minutiae of its source material (at the expense of its spirit), it's also a triumph of world building that leaves you eager to see what comes next in the sequel. And if Greig Fraser's dazzling cinematography doesn't get you with its dark, rich desert shades and majestic landscape shots, then the eclectic sounds of Hans Zimmer's electrifying score should do the trick.
Lupin: Part 3
The "Gentleman Thief" is back at last! "Lupin: Part 1" was a surprise delight upon its premiere in January 2021, delivering a spry, witty, and ever so often downright sexy French-language caper series that also had more than a few things to say about classism and racism. "Part 2" barely lost a step, either, continuing the adventures of Assane Diop (Omar Sy) as the crafty, charming criminal and master of disguise finally took down his duplicitous nemesis: the corrupt business tycoon Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre). "Part 3" will pick up where we left things, with Assane on the run from the Parisian authorities and desperate to find a way for him to be with his wife and son once more. "But the ghosts of the past are never far away, and an unexpected return will turn his plans upside down," as the synopsis for "Part 3" warns us. And if you've yet to partake in the world of "Lupin," consider this your chance to finally do so.
Fair Play
Erotic thrillers have been relegated to the realm of direct-to-streaming releases of late, although you should know by now that a lack of a proper theatrical run doesn't mean a film isn't worth your time. Enter writer/director Chloe Domont's feature debut "Fair Play," a movie that /Film's Ben Pearson hailed as "electric and perversely thrilling" in his rave review following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. "Oppenheimer" scene-stealer Alden Ehrenreich and "Bridgerton" star Phoebe Dynevor anchor the film as a young couple who just can't keep their hands off each other, only to find themselves locked in a dangerous power play following "an unexpected promotion at a cutthroat hedge fund" (as the synopsis puts it). It's the sort of adult genre movie that Adrian Lyne used to specialize in, but also one that draws from Domont's real-life experiences, serving up some all-too-timely commentary on modern workplace dynamics and relationships.
The Fall of the House of Usher
"The Haunting of Hill House" and "Midnight Mass" creator Mike Flanagan tackling Edgar Allan Poe? The horror maestro's final Netflix series "The Fall of the House of Usher" (don't panic, he hasn't died, he's just scored a new deal with Amazon) was a must-watch from the get-go, even before it became clear this is his attempt to meld a "Succession"-style story inspired by the real-world opioid crisis and the works of the master of Gothic fiction. "House of User" centers on the Usher family, the heads of a powerful and very corrupt pharmaceutical company, whose members suddenly (and mysteriously) find themselves being picked off one by one. Lest horror lovers get too excited, though, they might want to temper their expectations. In his review for /Film, Chris Evangelista wrote that "House of Usher" offers "plenty of great grand guignol joys" but "can't compare with Flanagan's previous, better Netflix sagas."
It Follows
Few horror films from the last 10 years have left a footprint quite as large as "It Follows." David Robert Mitchell's thriller wrings a whole lot of tension and terror out of the simple visual of people walking menacingly toward the camera, and it's a trick that many other horror movies have since tried to emulate to varying degrees of success ("Smile" being one of the more effective). Meanwhile, Maika Monroe established herself as a modern Scream Queen with her performance in the film as Jaimie or "Jay," a young woman who is hunted by a relentless supernatural entity after a sexual encounter with its previous target. Admittedly, "It Follows" has a habit of playing fast and loose with the "rules" of how the entity works (something that Quentin Tarantino once criticized), but even that's not enough to really diminish Mitchell's haunting metaphor about the way our sexual coming-of-age makes us that much more aware that death will find us, sooner or later.
