Let's Break Down Who May Or May Not Be Dead After Fast X
It's been just over 20 years, but the "Fast and Furious" saga is running out of road, and "Fast X" marks the beginning of the end. After going from small scale robberies to international espionage and even heading to space, there are not many other places to go, so "Fast X" involves a very "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation" plot that finds the family on the run from their biggest threats yet — The Agency that once shielded them, and also a live-action gender-fluid Bugs Bunny in the form of Jason Momoa's Dante Reyes.
Dante is the best villain the "Fast and Furious" franchise has got to date, and the best part of the movie. He is not just another guy who wants to rule the world, but one deeply obsessed with the events of "Fast Five," one who takes things personally and will stop at nothing until he destroys Dom and everything he loves. This means that no one is safe and people can die, even though the franchise has a habit of bringing people back from the dead.
Now that the movie is finally out, it's time to answer the big questions. who lived? Who died? And does it even matter?
Heavy spoilers for "Fast X" to follow.
R.I.P. Jakob Toretto, we hardly knew ye
First up is Jakob Toretto, who we barely knew before he was taken away from us. Introduced just a movie ago as Dom and Mia's estranged brother in "F9," he was initially antagonistic before ultimately being embraced as a member of the family.
In "Fast X," Jakob is one of the best parts of the film, essentially going on a road trip with his nephew, little Brian. They spend most of the movie joking around, doing carpool karaoke, and jumping out of airplanes. Unfortunately, even when Jakob has a sick cannon-equipped car, that isn't enough against Dante. In an effort to save Dom, Jakob sacrifices himself, using his car to stop some of Dante's henchmen on the highway, blowing himself up in the process.
But is he really dead? It would be shocking, in a bad way, to kill Dom's brother after literally only one movie. Plus, this is a franchise known for bringing everyone who died back, so maybe there is hope. After all, we didn't see a body, and in "Fate of the Furious," Dom did survive the explosion of a nuclear submarine by having a bunch of cars shield him from the fire, so it's very possible Jakob could have survived.
Will he actually return, though? His death was rather, well, finite. We actually saw Dom grieve and everything, so to bring him back may cheapen the moment.
What about Ramsey, Han, Tej and Roman?
"Fast X" makes the baffling decision to split the party, something you never do. In order to deliver the darkest chapter of the story and have Dom be all alone against Dante, he spends the vast majority of the runtime on his own. Letty is in a prison in Antarctica, while Ramsey, Han, Tej and Roman go on a mission of their own — even having a rather silly drug scene that doesn't go anywhere, all in the name of a pointless cameo with comedian Pete Davidson.
After briefly teaming up with Deckard Shaw before he left to look for his mother, the rest of the team grabs a jet to help Dom. Right before they arrive, however, one of Dante's surprising cohorts, The Agency's new leader Aimes (Alan Ritchson) shoots a rocket at the jet, making it crash and seemingly blow up on a mountainside. This kills everyone on board, seemingly finalizing Dante's goal of making Dom lose everything before he can kill him.
But are they really dead? It's one thing to kill one member of the family, but to kill most of them together in a brutal way and enter the next movie with just Dom, Letty and Mia? That would completely betray this franchise and what it has become. It would be the worst thing the franchise has done since Deckard Shaw was invited to the family barbecue. We're almost certain that they survived, probably by jumping out of the jet in their cars, as you do when you're part of the fambly.
Welcome back, Gisele!
You know who definitely is not dead? Gisele! Turns out, she is alive, and on a submarine!
In case you forgot, we were introduced to Gisele (Gal Gadot) in "Fast & Furious," the fourth film in the franchise. When we meet Gisele, she is a former Mossad agent working for drug lord Arturo Braga. After Dom saved her life, she became a part of the team, joining the Rio de Janeiro heist in "Fast Five" and officially becoming a member of the family, going on to romancing Han.
Gisele died tragically, sacrificing herself to save Han during the stupidly long runway scene in "Fast & Furious 6," falling to her death and inspiring the heartbroken Han to go to Tokyo, where he also supposedly died.
Except, like Han, Gisele apparently also survived certain death! How exactly remains to be seen, but she is... working with Cipher now? At the very least, she's part of her escape plan out of the black site prison that she's been stuck in with Letty.
So that's where we're at by the end of "Fast X," and we'll have to wait a couple years to find out who is really dead. And of course, Dante is still alive, so no one who lives will be safe in "Fast and Furious 11."
