Everything We Know About Good Omens Season 2, The Return Of Neil Gaiman's Fantasy Series
The Prime Video series "Good Omens," based on the novel "Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch" by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, is a delightfully irreverent romp through the apocalypse. The demon Crowley (David Tennant) and angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) are the unlikeliest of friends, but they still manage to stop the apocalypse together despite their many differences. Sure, there was a mix-up with the infant antichrist that led to a much sillier apocalypse than expected, but everything turned out okay in the end, and now the angel-demon duo are coming back for another, all-new adventure.
Season 1 of "Good Omens" felt like a one-and-done deal, with a complete story that ends rather resolutely, and there's no sequel novel to draw from. However, the success of the series and fan love for Aziraphale and Crowley was enough to inspire co-creator Gaiman to write an entirely new story for the otherworldly pair to explore. Sheen and Tennant have incredible onscreen chemistry and embody their roles as a fussy, bookish angel and a hard-living demon with panache. Whatever Gaiman comes up with for them to do together, it's sure to be great. Here's everything we know about the upcoming second season, as nice and accurate as Agnes could provide.
Good Omens season 2 release date and where to watch it
The second season of "Good Omens" wrapped filming all the way back in March 2022, so when can we expect to catch our cutie celestials on the job again? According to the folks at Prime Video, "Good Omens" season 2 will premiere July 28, 2023, exclusively on Prime Video. (They probably needed all of that extra time to make sure the special effects look perfect, because this is an effects-heavy series!) The second season will have six episodes, just like the first, and will be available in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
As part of Amazon's big announcement, Neil Gaiman teamed up with "superfans Hilly & Hannah Hindi of the 'The Hillywood Show'" to reveal the show's return date in a fan-funded video (titled simply "Good Omens Parody"). You can check out the video for yourselves in the space above.
Who is working on Good Omens season 2?
It almost goes without saying that Martin Sheen and David Tennant will return in their respective roles, because the series just wouldn't work without them. They managed to stop the apocalypse from going down, but that doesn't mean the universe is done with them. The other major angels are back as well, including Jon Hamm as the absolutely awful archangel Gabriel, Doon Mackichan as the cold and calculating archangel Michael, and Gloria Obianyo as the collected but occasionally terrifying archangel Uriel. Some familiar faces will be back in new roles, as well. Miranda Richardson, who portrayed Madame Tracy in season 1, will play a demon named Shax, while Maggie Service (Sister Theresa Garrulous) and Nina Sosanya (Mary Hodges/Sister Mary Loquacious) will be playing new characters named Maggie and Nina, respectively.
Newcomers to the series include Liz Carr as angel Saraqael, Shelly Conn as a demon named Beelzebub, and Quelin Sepulveda as one of the only other nice angels besides Aziraphale, Muriel. Season 1 cast members Benedict Cumberbatch and Frances McDormand will not be returning for season 2.
Meanwhile, behind the camera, Neil Gaiman is still onboard as an executive producer and co-showrunner, and he co-wrote the second season with fellow executive producer John Finnemore. All six episodes will be directed by Gaiman's co-showrunner and executive producer Douglas Mackinnon, who directed the first season as well.
What will Good Omens season 2 be about?
So what in the heck could "Good Omens" second season be about? Will Aziraphale and Crowley finally take their friendship to places shippers only dare dream? Will Aziraphale finally stick it to Gabriel and the rest of the hierarchy of angels once and for all? Can these two ever be truly content living among mortals in London?
All we know so far is that the two are "getting back to easy living amongst mortals in London's Soho when an unexpected messenger presents a surprising mystery." That's pretty, uh, mysterious, but I'm sure whatever comes their way, these two otherworldly nerds can figure it out.
As for Neil Gaiman, he's been planning to tell this story (or something like it) for decades. "It's 31 years since 'Good Omens' was published, which means it's 32 years since Terry Pratchett and I lay in our respective beds in a Seattle hotel room at a World Fantasy Convention, and plotted the sequel," he said when season 2 was first announced. Gaiman added:
"I got to use bits of the sequel in 'Good Omens' — that's where our angels came from. Terry's not here any longer, but when he was, we had talked about what we wanted to do with 'Good Omens,' and where the story went next. And now, thanks to BBC Studios and Amazon, I get to take it there."
