A Community Movie Is Coming, But Will Keith David Return As Elroy?
One of the long-running gags in the college comedy series "Community" was that it would get six seasons and a movie, and allegedly the Human Beings are finally getting that movie. While many of the cast have been confirmed to appear in the film, it still hasn't begun shooting and other cast members from the series have yet to announce their involvement. There's been a lot of back-and-forth on whether or not Donald Glover will return as the football-playing himbo Troy, for example, and there's no word on Yvette Nicole Brown returning as Christian homemaker Shirley. But what about Elroy, the virtual reality inventor and head of Greendale Community College's I.T. Department, played by Keith David? The character was introduced in the Yahoo!-backed season 6, which was doomed to fail from a marketing standpoint, but he was one of the best parts of the season. Keith David automatically improves everything he touches, and it would be a real shame to not have Elroy in the "Community" movie. Fans, however, will be relieved to hear that he is on board, at least as far as he's concerned.
In a recent interview with TVLine, the actor revealed that as far as he's aware, he'll be involved, and it sounds like Elroy is potentially going to be a part of the reunited study group after all of this time. Let's hope that's the case!
The return of a lovable nerd
Keith David's answer wasn't a total confirmation that he'll be in the "Community" movie, but it sounds like he hasn't heard anything to the contrary and would like to be involved:
"As far as I know, when it happens, I'll be there. I liked Elroy because he was smart but reclusive, and there are a lot of those kinds of people in the world, whose names you don't necessarily know but whose work has made a difference in every one of our lives. That's what I like about him."
The main cast of "Community" shifted in its last two seasons, as Chevy Chase's character Pierce was written off of the show due to behind-the-scenes tensions, Donald Glover left to focus on his music career, and Yvette Nicole Brown left to take care of her ailing father. That left some empty seats around the study table. Elroy was one of the members of the "Save Greendale Committee," who were put together in order to replicate the energy of the study group from the earlier seasons even though almost no one was actually still a student. The committee also included Paget Brewster as Debra, a consultant hired to help rescue Greendale, and Jonathan Banks as criminology professor and amateur cartoonist Buzz Hickey. If it were up to me, they'd all return, along with Ken Jeong's Ben Chang, Jim Rash's Dean Pelton, and all of the other incredible characters that made "Community" pure joy. Here's hoping star Alison Brie's concerns about the movie's shooting schedule are just because they're spending extra time getting the whole gang together.
