Elijah Wood Made A Stealth Appearance In Yellowjackets' Season 2 Premiere
This article contains spoilers for "Yellowjackets" season 2 episode 1.
Season 2 of "Yellowjackets" is officially underway on Showtime, and it's continuing to make the case for the most impressive cast on television. With an array of talent featuring Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, and Juliette Lewis as just some of the adult Yellowjackets who managed to survive their time stranded in the forest, the series also spotlights incredible work from their younger counterparts as well. The already impressive group of actors is expanding in season 2 with the grown-up version of Lottie (Simone Kessell) debuting as a new-age cult leader in the premiere and actor Lauren Ambrose ("Six Feet Under") will be appearing at some point in a substantial role as adult Van, the fan-favorite character played by Liv Hewson in the 1996 timeline.
An outsider will also come into the fray in the form of Elijah Wood, whose character Walter is teased in a quick but telling scene in the first episode. The inclusion of Wood already seems like a perfect fit and immediately adds another layer to the ongoing mysteries and attempted cover-ups that have dominated the storyline up until now. Only Wood's voice is heard in the first episode, but technically, it's the first scene that he and Christina Ricci have been in together since Ang Lee's '70s set coming-of-age drama "The Ice Storm."
Ricci's character Misty is already the most eccentric of all the surviving Yellowjackets, and adding Wood's unique energy could make for some hilariously awkward scenes between the two as the season progresses.
Elijah Wood's first appearance may hint that he's a threat
It's already been established that Misty considers herself to be a talented amateur sleuth that loves spending way too much time on true-crime forums. Of course, Misty becomes an accomplice in her very own crime after acting as Shauna's cleaner by helping to hide the body of troubled artist Adam Martin. Named after her parrot, Caligula, Misty signs in under her online nom du plume, "AfricanGrey," to check and see if any new theories are emerging about Adam's disappearance. The fact that Misty keeps checking for updates is more about her feeling smarter than every other citizen detective because she knows she's gotten away with murder.
She doesn't seem nervous or worried until she reads a comment by someone using the nickname "PuttingTheSickInForensics," who posits a theory that's way too close for comfort. Elijah Wood's voice is suddenly heard, revealing that the commenter is actually the new character, Walter. At first, he relies on the popular theory that it's always the husband in a crime of passion, which would potentially incriminate Shauna's boring husband, Jeff (Warren Kole). To Misty's dismay, the focus goes to "the mystery lady friend" showing that Walter is clearly on the right track. Misty downvotes the post on the fictional forum standing in for Reddit. What she's forgetting in that small but telling moment is that Walter can see that she downvoted the post, immediately making her a little more suspicious.
Misty and Walter are sure to meet in person very soon, and there is already speculation that the two wannabe investigators may embark on a case of their own. That could involve rescuing Natalie (Juliette Lewis) who is currently being detained by Lottie's mysterious cult. Their potential team-up could work as a sort of spin-off inside the already compelling world of "Yellowjackets."
"Yellowjackets" episodes are available to stream on Paramount+ and Showtime's app on Fridays but air on the Showtime network on Sundays.
