Lena Headey And Lana Condor To Star In Action-Dance Flick, Ballerina Overdrive
Ballet has captivated audiences for centuries — there's something effortlessly elegant about it. In a surprise to no one, stories revolving around ballet make for intriguing movies. It's a world we know so little about — where there's always a mile to go, a bigger goal to accomplish.
In recent times, most films centered on ballerinas tend to include themes about achieving greatness while navigating jealousy in a cutthroat industry where attaining perfection isn't a need; it is a necessity. There's already an exciting take coming out in the form of the "John Wick" spin-off starring Ana de Armas, in which the actress plays a dancer-assassin who sets out to exact revenge for her family — and there's another, totally-unrelated, action-thriller flick also centered on ballerinas being helmed by Vicky Jewson (The Witcher: Blood Origin) from a script by Kate Freund.
It's called "Ballerina Overdrive" and it features one hell of a cast.
Everything we know about the story of Ballerina Overdrive
As per the official logline, "Ballerina Overdrive" follows "a troupe of ballerinas who find themselves fighting for survival as they attempt to escape from a remote inn after their bus breaks down on the way to a dance competition." The film is said to have a dance-based action choreography and will begin filming in Serbia later this year. It should be pretty refreshing to see ballerinas in an action-thriller film as they fight to survive in the woods — instead of navigating their peers and difficult mentors. As for the characters in "Ballerina Overdrive," their priorities are set straight because, this time, they're not on stage, and their life is at stake.
Everything we know about the cast and crew of Ballerina Overdrive
"Ballerina Overdrive" has a pretty stellar ensemble cast: "Game of Thrones" star and five-time Emmy-nominee Lena Headey has joined the film, among others. There's also Lana Condor of "To All The Boys" and "Moonshot" fame, "Grown-ish" star Yara Shahidi, "Dora and the Lost City of Gold" alum Isabela Merced, and "A Quiet Place" actress Millicent Simmonds. Iris Apatow ("The Bubble") will also star. The roles and character details for "Ballerina Overdrive" are being kept under wraps, and no release date is in the pipeline yet.
The film is based on a script from Kate Freund ("Afterlife"), with Kelly McCormick, David Leitch, and Annie Marter serving as producers. Award-winning stunt designers Heidi Moneymaker and Renae Moneymaker — whose action stunt work includes recent credits on James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," have joined to create the "dance-based" action choreography that will be seen in the film. "Ballerina Overdrive" sounds fascinating already — and there's still so much we're yet to learn about. It is shaping up as an all-female epic with a twist — we'll have to wait and watch how elegant ballet dancers adopt whip-smart survival skills when a dance competition and, by extension of it — their reputation is on the line.
