What's Going On With Jack Quaid's My Adventures With Superman?
It's been nearly two years since "My Adventures With Superman," an animated collaboration between HBO Max and Cartoon Network was announced alongside a new, noir-inspired "Batman" animated series from J.J. Abrams and "The Batman" director Matt Reeves.
Starring Jack Quaid ("Star Trek: Lower Decks," "The Boys") as Clark Kent/Superman, Alice Lee as Lois Lane, and Ishmel Sahid as Jimmy Olsen, "My Adventures With Superman" was pitched as a show centered on the trio of friends as twenty-somethings interning for the Daily Planet, and finding themselves as individuals along the way. With its familiar, cutesy aesthetics, it was stacked up to be a promising, family-friendly series to add to the animated catalog on HBO Max.
Public coverage on the show has been suspiciously quiet since its initial announcement — and due to a tyrannical purge of Cartoon Network shows on the HBO Max platform last year thanks to the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, it seemed there was a strong possibility that the animated series might have become missing in action.
So, what happened? Is the show still in development? According to a Reddit AMA by DC Comics hosted in August 2022 with the series co-producer Josie Campbell and series artist Evan "Doc" Shaner, "My Adventures with Superman" is still going strong, and has current plans to release as soon as next year. Campbell wrote:
"And as an aside, yes, 'My Adventures With Superman' is still slated to come out next year on Cartoon Network and the app!" she wrote. "Get ready!"
Jack Quaid's Superman survives the merger
Even more recently in November 2022, Josie Campbell was interviewed by The Superman Homepage with a huge focus on what fans could expect from "My Adventures With Superman," in which Campbell definitively clarified that despite all the Cartoon Network-related cuts happening at HBO, their show is still going strong. Campbell shared:
"We were very fortunate to learn early on that 'Superman' would still be coming out on Cartoon Network and the app as planned. Mergers are always tumultuous, but we're glad that we still get to bring our love for Superman to fans old and new."
This is great news! The more interesting and distinct DC animated series, the merrier. From the bits of concept art and stills we have so far, "My Adventures With Superman" shares a similar visual style with shows like "Steven Universe," or "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power," but feels like a natural fit for the coming-of-age tone the show is trying to achieve. Campbell continued to share more details about this Superman, like their focus on modernizing Clark Kent and his supporting cast, or how their "North Star" was 1978's "Superman: The Movie," and the romantic chemistry between Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeve.
Campbell also had some kind words about the show's leading man, Jack Quaid:
"Jack has been absolutely phenomenal to work with! He's got great comedic timing as Clark, but he is also able to sell the kindness, strength, and dignity of Superman. It's been a real privilege to work with him – and it's also very funny to watch 'The Boys' after a record. I really can't look at Clark OR Hughie the same!"
There's no official release date, but "My Adventures with Superman" is expected to release sometime in 2023. Stay tuned for more info.
