The Perfect Nanny: Everything We Know About Nicole Kidman And Maya Erskine's HBO Limited Series
After the success of "Big Little Lies" and "The Undoing," everyone's favorite film ambassador, Nicole Kidman, is returning to HBO alongside "Pen15" star Maya Erskine in "The Perfect Nanny." The upcoming limited series has all of the makings for another stand-out hit for HBO, and the combination of Kidman and Erskine is what dreams are made of. Both women possess an abundance of talent and a knack for portraying nuance in even the most difficult situations ... which is absolutely needed when tackling a project as intense and complicated as "The Perfect Nanny." Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming series but be warned, this ain't a "Pen15" comedy nor is it a campy AMC ad. "The Perfect Nanny" is going to be one hell of an emotional gut punch.
When and where to watch The Perfect Nanny
"The Perfect Nanny" will air on HBO, but the anticipated release date has not yet been announced. As per Deadline's reporting, HBO became the home of the series after "a very competitive situation." It makes sense considering Nicole Kidman is one of the biggest names in Hollywood and Maya Erskine has proven time and again to be one of the most creative and fascinating voices working today. HBO tends to put their golden-performance programs on Sunday evenings, and "The Perfect Nanny" sounds like it'll be a perfect addition to their coveted start-of-week schedule.
What The Perfect Nanny will be about
"The Perfect Nanny" is a series adaptation of Leïla Slimani's award-winning 2016 novel of the same name. The translation rights for the novel sold in a bidding war, and the book quickly became an international bestseller. The story follows a seemingly perfect nanny who takes a job working for a couple with two young children, but her perfect demeanor soon reveals something darker and more dangerous. The novel tackles issues of race and class division, set against the backdrop of the ultimate tragedy — the death of children.
Slimani's novel was loosely inspired by the devastating true-life murders of Lucia and Leo Krim in 2012. I'll spare the details, but if you're a parent, this might be an incredibly tough watch. Their unthinkable deaths inspired Lulu & Leo's Law in New York, which makes it a crime to knowingly and materially misrepresent the qualifications of a person applying for work as a child caregiver. While Maya Erskine is most well-known for her comedic work, it's safe to say "The Perfect Nanny" will be anything but.
What we know about the cast and crew of The Perfect Nanny
Maya Erskine is the creator and writer of the limited series and is also starring opposite Nicole Kidman. While it's not yet been declared which roles they will be playing, it's likely that Erskine will be playing the nanny while Kidman will play the mother of the children. "The Perfect Nanny" was named one of the 10 Best Books of the Year by The New York Times Book Review, so there's already plenty of esteem surrounding the title before the series shoots a single frame.
Kidman and Per Saari are executive producing for Kidman's Blossom Films, and Erskine is also executive producing alongside Pascal Caucheteux for Why Not Productions in addition to Philippe Godeau for Pan-Européenne.
