When Woody Met Dory: Watch Tom Hanks And Ellen DeGeneres Act Out A Pixar Crossover

If you're a big fan of Pixar Animation, there's a good chance that you've heard of The Pixar Theory. Originally created by Jon Negroni, The Pixar Theory proposes that every single movie from the animation studio actually takes place within the same universe by finding little threads to connect each and every movie to each other somehow. But despite the fact that Pixar movies contain easter eggs referencing some of the other Pixar movies, it's just a theory in the end.

But what if characters from the Pixar movies could actually run into each other? Tom Hanks was recently a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which just so happens to be hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, the voice of the titular forgetful fish in Finding Dory. And while they were talking about working on Pixar movies, Hanks decided to have the audience close their eyes while he and Ellen improvised a quick scene where Woody from Toy Story meets Dory, and the result is as funny and adorable as you'd expect.

Aside from being just a wonderful little riff between the two Pixar stars, Hanks and DeGeneres also dive into just how challenging it is to record lines for an animated movie. Most people assume that since they're just recording in a sound booth all day that it's an easy paycheck. But as Ellen explains, you have to convey as much emotion as possible using just your voice. Sure, the animation will do some of the lifting on-screen, but that voicework is still a huge part of what makes the emotion work.

With this little imagined scene in my head of Woody meeting Dory, part of me wonders if Pixar will ever decide to do some kind of crossover movie with some of their characters. With some of them it would be. For example, the world of Cars simply can't interact with any other Pixar movies in a way that makes sense. But films like Ratatouille, Toy Story and Finding Nemo could easy have their characters meet each other. In fact, a crossover of Toy Story and Finding Nemo might be the most viable option since the fish and the toys could easily help each other. That will likely never happen, but it's certainly fun to think about.
