Anyone Want Dolph Lundgren As Cable In 'Deadpool 2'?
Now that Deadpool fans have had the privilege of seeing the Merc with a Mouth brought to the big screen properly, they're eagerly anticipating what director Tim Miller and writers Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick have in store for the sequel. It's still early days on the follow-up to the R-rated surprise hit of the year, but thanks to the credits scene at the end of Deadpool, we already know one thing we can expect from Deadpool 2, and that's the introduction of Cable.
Ever since Cable was confirmed to appear in the sequel, fans have been trying to figure out who the best man for the job would be. One of the more popular suggestions, with support from Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld, has been Jon Hamm while Avatar star Stephen Lang also threw his own name into the ring. Now one more possible candidate for who should play Cable has emerged in the form of Dolph Lundgren. Find out more below.
Dolph Lundgren already took a role as a Marvel Comics character in the 1989 adaptation of The Punisher, and that prompted the folks over at Nerdist to ask him whether or not he would consider entering the Marvel cinematic universe. Lundgren's answer wasn't very well-informed, but he did have one particular idea:
"I haven't watched a lot of these superhero movies; for some reason, I don't know, I'm just busy making films. I did hear in... Deadpool, isn't there a character named Cable that's coming? Like, he's a big guy? I guess I could kick some butt doing that, I suppose. We'll see. When I saw the picture, he looks a little bit like Ivan Drago mixed with Gunner Jensen mixed with... I don't know."
This sounds less like something Dolph Lundgren was aware of due to his own research and something that maybe his agent has floated as a role to potentially pursue. Lundgren doesn't sound particularly interested in the role, mostly because he doesn't seem to know much about him beyond the fact that "he's a big guy." There's no rule that an actor or actress must already be familiar with a comic character in order to adequately portray them, but a passion for that character certainly couldn't hurt.
At the end of the day, while he has the right look and age, Dolph Lundgren isn't really an actor with the chops to pull off a role like Cable. Sure, he's a strong presence in the action world, but his dramatic skills leave something to be desired. Even on the comedy side of things, Lundgren doesn't really bring much to the table, and if you need anymore evidence of that, just watch the trailer for Kindergarten Cop 2.
It's still early days on Deadpool 2, and there's plenty of time to figure out who is going to play Cable. For my money, the best candidate would be Mel Gibson. But we'll see what happens.
