Vivica A. Fox Returning For 'Independence Day 2'

The cast of Independence Day 2 continues to grow. Today's new addition is Vivica A. Fox, who'll reprise the role of Jasmine Dubrow from the 1996 original. She's the second returning cast member after Jeff Goldblum. Get all the details on the Vivica A Fox Independence Day 2 casting after the jump.

Fox and director Roland Emmerich shared the good news on Twitter.

Fox's Jasmine was the exotic dancer girlfriend (later wife) to Will Smith's Steven Dubrow. She was also the mother of Dylan Dubrow, played by Ross Bagley in the original and Jessie Usher in the upcoming sequel. Smith will not return.

Also on board for Independence Day 2 are Charlotte Gainsbourg and Liam Hemsworth. The latter is rumored to be playing the son-in-law of President Whitmore (originally portrayed by Bill Pullman, expected but not yet confirmed to return).

Independence Day 2 is scripted by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, with rewrites by James Vanderbilt and Carter Blanchard. The sequel has been in the works for several years already. At one point it was envisioned as a trilogy, but at the moment only a single film has been greenlit.

We've previously heard the film would be set about two decades later, with a new generation of fighters going up against the next wave of invading aliens. However, specific plot details are hard to come by right now. While Emmerich and his team have talked about the story in the past, we don't know what's changed since then.

The first Independence Day helped Fox break through from TV  to film. She's been working steadily ever since. Her career highlights include the two Kill Bill movies, Batman & Robin, Soul Food, and Sharknado 2: The Second One.

Independence Day 2 is on slotted for June 24, 2016, 20 years almost to the day after the original Independence Day hit theaters.
