'The Strain' Final Season Trailer: Corey Stoll Is Humanity's Last Hope
An FX show that's had its ups and downs is coming to a close this summer. Based on Chuck Hogan and Guillermo del Toro's trilogy of books, The Strain was initially expected to last three years. Early on, though, its creators realized there was more left to the series to explore. At one point, showrunner Carlton Cuse thought it could go to season five, but they're happy to end the series on its own terms with the fourth and final season, which takes place after humans lost the world to vampires.
Below, watch The Strain final season trailer.
The series picks up nine months after season three left off. Vampires may be sucking the world dry, but Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll) is still fighting the good fight. The vamps are now stronger than ever and able to carry out their business during the day, thanks to season three's nuclear explosion. Most of the humans do the vamps' bidding now to stay alive, but Goodweather and the gang, who've been split apart, will do what they can to save the world.
Here's the trailer for the last season of The Strain:
The vampire action looks to remain bloody and disgusting fun. The series has never lacked in that department. The makeup effects, the creature designs, and the monster action rarely ever disappoints. It's usually the humans who can get in the way, funnily enough. The drama, especially between Goodweather and his troublemaking son Zach (Max Charles), isn't as always as captivating as the world. There have been a few unsatisfying storylines on The Strain, but some characters make you want to return for more, like Vasiliy Fet (Kevin Durand) and Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley).
Here's the synopsis for the final season of The Strain:
The Strain is FX's high concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, former head of the Center for Disease Control, Canary Team in New York City. After he and his team were called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism, Eph and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers waged war for the fate of humanity itself.
As the final season begins, nine months have passed. The world has fallen into darkness, and the strigoi are in control. The explosion at the end of season three triggered a global nuclear apocalypse. The resulting nuclear winter liberated the strigoi allowing them to move about during daytime, and enabling the Master to establish a totalitarian regime. Preying on the fears of the populace, the Master and his minions have created an unsettling alliance in "The Partnership."
The majority of humans are now working for the strigoi, operating with a single understanding – collaborate or die. With the world in disarray and our heroes disbanded, each of them will have to overcome personal hardship and defy death for even the smallest chance at fighting back. All the while, the Master reigns supreme, furthering his scheme for the end of the world as we know it.
In the face of annihilation...do our heroes have what it takes to save humankind?
The Strain final season premieres on July 16.
