'That's My Boy' Red Band Trailer - Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, F-Bombs, Strippers, Lots Of Bodily Fluids
The first red-band trailer has dropped for Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg's That's My Boy, formerly titled I Hate You Dad. Sandler plays an aging party boy and horrible father who falls into deep debt. He decides to move in with his more tightly wound son (Samberg), who's on the verge of getting married, to a character played by Leighton Meester.
The script comes from Happy Endings creator David Caspe, with a rewrite by Ken Marino and David Wain, which is promising; the fact that it was directed by Mr. Popper's Penguins writers Sean Anders and John Morris and produced by Sandler's Happy Madison is somewhat less so. I could probably overlook the fact that Sandler's character seems like a legitimately terrible human being if the trailer were edgy, interesting, or funny, but it's none of those things. From here, it looks like the folks involved decided to replace actual jokes with lots of cursing and bodily fluid humor. There are spit takes, vomit, semen, blood, and like ten "fucks", but none of that makes up for the fact that "It tastes like fucking dick infused with balls!" only sounds clever to a ten-year-old.
What makes that so disappointing is that the talent involved suggests that That's My Boy should be much better than it looks. Caspe's Happy Endings is honestly one of the funniest comedies on television right now, and I don't have to remind you that Wain and Marino have done some great work in the past. And while Sandler's got some truly awful projects under his belt (there's a reason he's breaking Razzie records), we know he has legitimate talent.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that this first red-band trailer is just an exceptionally bad one, and that the finished product won't be quite so dull. That's My Boy opens June 15.
