Anna Kendrick Wants To Play Marvel's Squirrel Girl
There are plenty of comic books movies coming down the pipeline. Marvel Studios has new heroes like Black Panther and Captain Marvel getting their own movies, 20th Century Fox has another Wolverine sequel on the way, and Sony has teamed with Marvel to revive Spider-Man yet again. But one superhero we've heard nothing about on the feature film side of things is Squirrel Girl. Wait, who?
Believe it or not, Squirrel Girl is a Marvel superhero and she has gained quite the following in recent years. While there's no indication that a Squirrel Girl movie is even in development, that might change once the folks at Marvel Studios hear that Anna Kendrick may have an interest in playing the superhero. Find out more about this Squirrel Girl movie chatter after the jump.
Speaking with Net-A-Porter, the Pitch Perfect star was asked if there was a superhero that she would consider playing sometime in the future. Kendrick responded with this surprising answer:
"My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should [play her]. I don't know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!"
So Anna Kendrick isn't exactly a die hard fan of Squirrel Girl, but there at least appears to be some interest there. Sometimes that's all it takes to get the ball moving on a project like this. However, I'm not entirely sure Squirrel Girl fits in with anything Marvel has going on right now.
For those who aren't familiar with Squirrel Girl, she's a mutant by the name of Doreen Green. She grew up idolizing Iron Man (which sounds like the new Spider-Man) and attempted to be his sidekick under the name Squirrel Girl after defeating Doctor Doom by using an army of squirrels that she can communicate with. While that didn't pan out for her, she eventually ended up getting recruited by the Great Lakes Avengers, who later became the Great Lakes X-Men when they determined each of them were mutants.
In addition to communicating with squirrels, the agile Squirrel Girl also has a prehensile tail that is about three or four feet long, claws on her hands, an enhanced sense of smell, knuckle spikes that are two or three inches long, strong teeth that can chew through wood and, of course, superhuman strength. Some of the sillier traits include pouches of nuts which she uses to feed her squirrel friends and amusingly refers to as her nut sacks.
The character sounds just a little too goofy for the Marvel cinematic universe, but you never know how things will develop. Plus, in the comic books, Squirrel Girl is no joke as she's even proven to be a formidable foe for Wolverine. If Hugh Jackman wasn't putting his claws away after Wolverine 3, and if that rumor of a potential crossover between Fox and Marvel came to fruition, I wouldn't mind seeing Anna Kendrick battling Wolverine on the big screen. But all of that sounds like quite the pipedream. Maybe Squirrel Girl would be better served in her own franchise outside of the MCU.
Anyone out there want to see a Squirrel Girl movie?
