Rosario Dawson May Be Moving On From Marvel's Netflix Shows
Many have long felt that Marvel's Netflix shows don't deserve Rosario Dawson, and it looks like Rosario Dawson is starting to think so, too. During a recent panel discussion, Dawson revealed her days as Claire Temple in Marvel's Netflix universe may be numbered.
Whenever Rosario Dawson's Claire Temple pops-up in a Marvel Netflix show, two things are immediately apparent: one is that Dawson will turn in a great performance; the other is that the show in question will waste her talents in a thankless role. Claire first appeared in Daredevil, and ever since then, she's made an appearance in every Marvel Netflix show except The Punisher. And time after time, it's clear the respective showrunners don't really know what to do with Claire. She usually will pop up to bandage up someone's wounds, deliver a quippy line or two, and then recede into the background. During a recent appearance at MCM Comic Con London (via The Mary Sue), Dawson told the crowd that her upcoming appearance as Claire in Luke Cage season 2 might be mark the end of her days in the Marvel Netflix universe:
"I don't know if I'll be back after this, to be honest, but it's been an amazing few years. I've been on a lot of different shows. I mean, I don't know if maybe they do a third season of Luke Cage potentially, or maybe if they figure out some kind of way for me to be on The Punisher—just so I can feel like I've done every show."
Dawson also added that personal reasons were also making her consider give up the Marvel Netflix grind, saying: "My daughter is in high school, so I kind of want to not be 3000 miles away for work."
While I'll be sad to see Dawson's Claire Temple go, I also know that the Marvel Netflix shows never gave her enough to do. As a result, Claire's absence won't be a huge deal, plot-wise, for future Marvel Netflix shows. Still, it was always nice to see Dawson pop-up here and there, and she actually has a somewhat significant role in Luke Cage, especially this upcoming season.
If Dawson's time with Marvel is coming to an end, I hope Luke Cage season 2 gives her a proper send-off. And who knows, maybe someone at Marvel and Netflix will wise up and back a dump truck full of money up at her door and convince her to stick around a little longer.
Luke Cage season 2 arrives on Netflix June 22, 2018.
