VOTD: Advanced Robots React To The 'Morgan' Trailer
Next weekend brings Morgan to theaters, a sci-fi thriller produced by Ridley Scott about a rapidly evolving, synthetically created person who has decided she's done with being kept locked up like some kind of science experiment. Even though the movie is more about tampering with genetics rather than artificial intelligence, someone at 20th Century Fox thought it would be cool to see how two of the most advanced robots in existence today would react to the teaser trailer for Morgan. The results are simultaneously entertaining and a bit creepy.
Watch robots react to the Morgan trailer after the jump.
The robots in question are magicLab's EDI (Electronic Deceptive Intelligence, on the left) and the University of Pisa's FACE (Facial Automation for Conveying Emotions). You might have seen them in TED talks or featured in various technology news segments, because they're two of the most famous and recognizable robots in the industry today.
While watching the trailer, EDI is the more reactive of the two, simply because he actually reacts out loud to the trailer several times, almost like someone's mother might do at home. I have a feeling EDI would get really annoying in a movie theater and wouldn't know when to shut up. Meanwhile, FACE seems to be more intrigued by the video, making plenty of subtle expressions that range from intrigue to confusion to surprise. They're just fascinating to watch, and one day, they'll be the death of us.
If you'd like to see more from Morgan, you can watch the most recently released trailer right here. Otherwise, if you want to know more about the robots, check out this featurette:
A corporate troubleshooter (Kate Mara) is sent to a remote, top-secret location, where she is to investigate and evaluate a terrifying accident. She learns the event was triggered by a seemingly innocent "human," who presents a mystery of both infinite promise and incalculable danger.
Morgan arrives in theaters September 2.
