'Mother!' Honest Trailer: If Extreme Makeover Were Directed By Satan
One of the most divisive and infuriating movies of the year was undoubtedly mother!, the latest film from director Darren Aronofsky. For some reason, audiences expected the filmmaker behind Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, Black Swan and Noah to make a straightforward horror thriller starring one of the biggest stars in the world. But that's not what mother! is at all.
As part of their viewer's choice kick-off to 2018, the folks at Honest Trailers sink their teeth into the movie that is strange, suspenseful, confusing, and gruesome. You really should see the movie for yourself, and then come back and watch the mother! Honest Trailer.
As the Honest Trailer indicates, mother! is either a retelling of the Bible from nature's perspective, an allegory about global warming, a meditation on the creative process, a critique about traditional gender roles or a story about how hard it is to date a famous person. Seriously, even though the Honest Trailer is poking fun at mother!, it's kind of remarkable that these are all viable readings of a movie that feels like a hodgepodge of insanity on the surface.
Don't expect to get any clear answer to what mother! is about, because even Darren Aronofsky's answer to the question isn't definitive. But that's covered by a line that Javier Bardem says in discussing the beauty of what people take away from his character's writing is different but still just as moving. You know, this might be the first Honest Trailer that is more thoughtful than funny, and that's just fine with us.
