Exclusive: Mondo's New 'Bambi' And 'Fantasia' Posters Are Beautiful [Updated]
UPDATE: A few more posters from the show have been revealed and we've added them to the gallery below.
Last month, Mondo and Cyclops Print Works revealed a new gallery show and it's a doozy. As its name implies, Never Grow Up: A Disney Art Show is an art show dedicated to Disney classics, with an all-star roster of talent offering gorgeous takes on some of the best and most famous animated movies ever made.
Today, we're pleased to debut two posters that will be available at the show when doors open later this week: Laurent Durieux's Bambi and Becky Cloonan's Fantasia.
As is the case with the best pop culture art, both posters incorporate familiar ideas and images while putting a unique spin on them, offering a perspective or a style we normally don't associate with these characters. While 1942's Bambi is often sold with its bright colors and adorable animal characters, it's actually a melancholy film about the loss of youth and innocence, aspects that artist Laurent Durieux capture in his print, Mondo X Cyclops Print Works Print #11: Fantasia. The muted colors and the body language of the young Bambi tell you everything you need to know about which scene from the film is being captured in this moment...and the older Bambi, staring into the warm colors on the horizon, tells you everything you need to know about where he's going.
Durieux's more classical approach is finely contrasted by Becky Cloonan's Fantasia poster, which depicts the infamous "Night on Bald Mountain" sequence from the classic film in all of its nightmare-inducing glory. Cloonan has plenty of experience in designing horror posters (several of them for Mondo), which makes her uniquely suited for this particular movie. This piece, titled Mondo X Cyclops Print Works Print #12: Bambi, is as beautiful as it is terrifying, a piece that knows very well which sequence from Fantasia really lingers in the back of our minds (and it's not the dancing hippos). This is the only Disney print you'll ever see that could also double as a gig poster for a heavy metal band.
For the record, here are the other posters from the show that have been revealed so far – Jonathan Burton's 101 Dalmatians, Matt Taylor's Aladdin, Ken Taylor's Big Hero 6, Pinocchio by Jessica Seamans, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs by James Flames, Lilo and Stich by Rosemary Valero O'Connell, Alice in Wonderland by Tom Whalen, Mary Poppins by Marc Aspinall, The Little Mermaid by Nicols Delort, and The Fox and the Hound by Teagan White.
Of course, this is only the tip of iceberg. The complete list of talent that will be featured in the show is stunning. From this list, I'm especially curious to see the work from Martin Ansin and JC Richard, artists who already command a great deal of wall real estate in my home. Here's the line-up:
Never Grow Up: A Disney Art Show opens its doors on April 28 at 3:00 P.M. As always, posters that don't sell out during the show's run will become available online.
