Mel Brooks Teases Fans With Talk Of 'Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money'
The idea of Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money was a great joke in Mel Brooks' hilarious 1987 comedy Spaceballs. The line about a hypothetical, self-aware sequel was a commentary on the licensing and popularity of the original Star Wars franchise Brooks was spoofing. Yet, because of that joke, Brooks and his co-stars have been asked about the sequel for the past twenty-five years.
Well, with a new series of Star Wars films coming this year, Brooks thinks it might finally be the right time for the Spaceballs sequel. In a new interview he hypothesized that, if they were to ever make Spaceballs 2, after the release of The Force Awakens would be the time. But the hurdles are many. This all started when a Reddit thread revealed Brooks talked about Spaceballs 2 on Adam Corolla's Take a Knee podcast. Since then, the quote has been transcribed, via Bloody Disgusting.
Maybe I could do another musical, maybe I could do another movie. I was thinking about Spaceballs the other day. In Spaceballs, in the movie, Bill Pullman says to me, Yogurt, just plain Yogurt, he says 'Do you think we'll ever meet again?' and I say 'Well, I don't know...maybe in Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.' And I'm thinking now, if I did a movie that came out right after Star Wars comes out — maybe a couple of months later — I'd have a big weekend, you know? No matter what, even if it fell on its ass and didn't get its money back...but that first weekend, the anticipation of seeing Spaceballs 2, would...I still have Daphne Zuniga and I still have Rick Moranis if he'd do it, and I've still got me.
To me, there are three keys here. First is Brooks himself. He's still a dynamo but he's pushing 90. Does he really have it in him to make another big budget movie? Second is Disney. When Brooks made Spaceballs in 1987, he just had to deal with Lucasfilm, a company who pretty much thought they were done with making Star Wars movies. Allowing their brand to be spoofed at that time was probably okay. Will Disney allow their new cash cow to be publicly spoofed mere months after they relaunch it?
Third is Moranis. The actor hasn't appeared on screen since 1996 and as recently as last year, Brooks said he couldn't/wouldn't make Spaceballs 2 without him. Then again the actor did say he'd never say "No" to anything if it was presented to him correctly, so what better way to make a comeback than as Dark Helmet?
So there are a lot of obstacles in the way of getting Spaceballs 2 made. A lot. Nevertheless, it's possible, and I think Brooks is right in thinking releasing that long discussed film after The Force Awakens could be a huge financial success. But, as of now, despite what headlines on the Internet make it sound like, it's still just a Hail Mary idea.
Do you think Spaceballs 2 will happen?
