Martin Freeman Drops Hints About His "Ambiguous" Character In 'Captain America: Civil War'
Martin Freeman's role in Captain America: Civil War has been one of the production's better kept secrets. We know for sure he's in the film, but not whom he's playing. However, we may finally be getting closer to an answer as Freeman has just shared a bunch of details about his mysterious character. Get the Martin Freeman Civil War character clues after the jump.
Freeman dished on his Captain America: Civil War character in a chat with BadTaste.it (via Coming Soon):
He works for the American government. He works in conjunction with the superheroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes' power, I suppose. So you're not quite sure which side he's on. It looks a little bit like he's playing one game when actually he's playing another. It's the kind of character I like because it's ambiguous and because you don't know whether he's good or bad. I like that area that isn't black or white, I like the grays, because I think there's just more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line.
And lest you think he'll reprise his Fargo role for Captain America: Civil War, Freeman good-naturedly clarified that he'll be employing an "East Coast American" accent instead of a Minnesotan one.
Freeman's comments rule out some of the earlier guesses that were floating around. He's obviously not playing the British prime minister, and he's not a villain – or at least not yet.
It's quite possible Freeman is playing an entirely new character invented just for the MCU. But assuming he's portraying a familiar face, one potential candidate is Henry Peter Gyrich, a government liaison who proves a thorn in the Avengers' side. But that character has already appeared (very briefly) in the first X-Men movie, so it's not clear whether Marvel even has the rights to the character.
Another, stronger possibility is Everett Ross, a U.S. government agent who is an expert on the nation of Wakanda. If Freeman is playing him, he'll likely return alongside Chadwick Boseman in 2018's Black Panther. And for what it's worth, Freeman has also indicated that his character could return for installments past Captain America: Civil War.
Captain America: Civil War opens May 6, 2016.
