Cool Stuff: 'Lord Of The Rings', 'Harry Potter' And 'Jurassic Park' Get Phenomenal New Prints
It's no secret that we love great artwork inspired by film and television, and today we have a smorgasbord of fantastic new prints from three different artists for three different beloved movies from the sci-fi and fantasy genres, all of which happen to be adaptations of beloved books as well.
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Jurassic Park all get gorgeous art tributes from Dan Mumford, Gerhard and Kilian Eng respectively. You can see all the prints below, including details on how to get your hands on (most of) them, and how much lighter they'll make your wallet.
Jurassic Park by Kilian Eng
We'll feature this one first (via io9) if only because you won't be able to have these framed on your wall. Why? Because these two Jurassic Park prints were a private commission for only 15 people. But if you have some friends with some money to spare, maybe you can round up some cash and get your own private commission of whatever piece of artwork you want to make.
My personal favorite out of the two pieces is the one featuring the T-Rex, but that iconic scene when Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler see the dinosaurs for the first time is a classic as well. Both would look great on a wall, and we're insanely jealous of those who paid to have these pieces done.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by Gerhard
There aren't a lot of Harry Potter pieces like this out there, but this officially licensed collaboration with Dark Hall Mansion and Warner Bros. Entertainment is a great way to honor the film that started it all, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The piece takes a cue from one of the original teaser posters, focusing on the boats that take the students across the lake to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but an image of Harry with Hedwig is added in the upper right hand corner.
If I'm being totally honest, the composition and style of this piece just isn't appealing to me. I just have my own personal preferences when it comes to movie art, and this doesn't line up with my tastes. But looking at the detail and work that went into this creation in the press release for the print, I have nothing but respect for Gerhard and his incredible artistry.
There are four different versions of this 24" x 36" print. In addition to the standard blue and grey variant above, each of those prints also has a corresponding foil edition. And the good news is that these are all timed editions available for purchase until the end of the day on February 28th. The blue standard edition is $65 while the grey variant is $100. Meanwhile, both the blue and grey foil editions are $150 each. Get your hands on whichever one you want at the Dark Hall Mansion Store right here.
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King by Dan Mumford
Finally, Dan Mumford has delivered the first in what will become a trilogy of Lord of the Rings artwork from French Paper Art Club and Geek-Art. This is another officially licensed print paying tribute to the final chapter of the iconic film trilogy from director Peter Jackson. Prints for The Two Towers and Fellowship of the Ring will be released in the coming months, and this print is a hell of a way to being the new series.
The print is a 24" x 36", six-color screenprint with an edition of 200 that will cost 50 euros, or a little over $55 in the United States. It hasn't sold out yet, so if you're looking for a new collection of Lord of the Rings prints, this is the place to start.
