Jesse Eisenberg May Not Be Back For 'Justice League'
In just a few weeks, Justice League starts production. Since this will be the first time Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg will be seen on the big screen at the same time, it's bound to be bigger than even Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Of course, that all depends on whether or not the fans who were disappointed by Zack Snyder's comic book battle are willing to give him another chance for the DC Comics superhero ensemble.
We're still not sure what the story will be in Justice League, but it sounds like Jesse Eisenberg may not be reprising his role as the villain Lex Luthor, at least for the first part of the two-part DC Comics flick. Read what Eisenberg had to say about Lex Luthor in Justice League after the jump, but beware of spoilers for Batman v Superman.
Speaking with Business Insider, Eisenberg was asked about his involvement with Justice League and either he's playing coy or he doesn't know anything about his return to the comic book universe just yet:
I don't know if they are so settled on where my character goes, I only hope I have another opportunity to work with these wonderful people and play this interesting character.
Jesse Eisenberg's performance in Batman v Superman has been one of the more divisive parts of the movie, with some thinking it was just an over-the-top, evil version of his take on Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network. Frankly, I liked this take on Lex Luthor rather than the calmer, sly businessman we've seen in previous screen iterations. But they're not about to replace the actor in the role, so what's the deal with Lex Luthor in Justice League?
As we saw in Batman v Superman, Lex Luthor ended up getting apprehended and imprisoned for his role in bringing Doomsday to life and by association, destroying a big chunk of Metropolis again. Actually, we didn't see him apprehended, but that was revealed in a deleted scene released by Warner Bros. earlier this week. However, that scene and the end of the movie points to Lex Luthor having something to do with calling upon the villain Darkseid to come take advantage of Earth's weakness now that Superman is dead (at least for the time being).
Knowing all that, it stands to reason that maybe Jesse Eisenberg won't be doing much in Justice League: Part One. Maybe he'll stay locked up and most of the first part of Justice League is about assembling the superheroes. But the question is what villain will they be facing? If it's Darkseid, why wouldn't Lex Luthor have some part in the movie? Maybe Darkseid doesn't arrive until Justice League: Part Two and we'll get some kind of different villain in the first movie, meaning Lex Luthor doesn't need to be seen.
Either way, Justice League begins shooting in a few weeks, and if Jesse Eisenberg really doesn't know if he'll be back, it's likely that he won't be on board. But plenty of last minute additions can be made with a credits scene, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Justice League: Part One arrives on November 17, 2017.
