James Gunn Offers Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 Update
May is Marvel's month. It has been for a while and it'll continue to be for even longer. This year there's Avengers: Age of Ultron. Next year, it's Captain America: Civil War. Then, in 2017, the Guardians will be back in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. With two years to go before release, writer/director James Gunn isn't exactly rushing just yet, but he's working hard and steady on the movie. Last we heard, he had the entire story laid out and Marvel told him the ideas were "risky."
Now, he's revealed a treatment of the story has been done and approved by Marvel and actual work on the screenplay will start soon. Read more of the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 update below.
James Gunn was testing out the new app Periscope and decided to do an impromptu Q&A. Screenrant captured the action. Here's the Guardians 2 quote:
I turned in my treatment. I'm going in to meet about it Friday and we will start working on the screenplay next week.
Which is odd because, later in the talk he then said that the script is "very, very far along." 70 pages along, in fact.
So whether or not Gunn has started the screenplay or not, we don't know, but I think he probably has. Or he's just got a super detailed, 70-page treatment which should transition fairly simply into a screenplay. Semantics aside, it sounds like Gunn is making good progress on the film. The hardest part, coming up with an idea a studio can feel good sinking hundreds of millions of dollars into, is done and now it's just about making it tangible.
Other Guardians of the Galaxy 2 updates that came out of the chat include the fact Gunn said his Guardians of the Galaxy 2 pitch meeting was the "best experience he ever had with a pitch." He also said they might have to make Karen Gillan Nebula again without shaving her head, Ronan is dead, the film will be in 3D again, there's no performance capture for Rocket or Groot, and we'll learn about the characters in a "deeper way" in the sequel.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is set for release May 5, 2017.
