Keep Your Eyes Peeled: 'Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2' Has Another Obscure Easter Egg
Marvel Studios is no stranger to slipping easter eggs into its movies, and the first Guardians of the Galaxy was overflowing with them. In fact, it had so many that even now, three years after it was in theaters, the most hardcore fans still haven't spotted all of them. Well, there's a new challenge on the horizon for easter egg hunters: writer/director James Gunn says there's an obscure one coming up in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Do you think you have what it takes to find it on your first theatrical viewing?
Most of the easter eggs in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy have been located already. When the Guardians visit Knowhere, they encounter Benicio Del Toro's The Collector, whose warehouse is stacked with items and references that comic fans easily spotted – Cosmo the space dog, a dark elf from Thor: The Dark World, even creatures from Gunn's monster movie Slither. But Gunn has teased one mysterious reference that has yet to be discovered. Before you ask: yes, we're pretty sure it really exists, because Gunn offered to pay a fan one hundred thousand dollars if it doesn't.
In a new interview with The Independent, Gunn was asked if fans should be on the lookout for a similarly obscure easter egg in the upcoming Vol. 2, and the filmmaker simply nodded and said "yes," being careful not to give anything away. When asked if he was finally going to settle the mystery and reveal the easter egg from the first film any time soon, he said, "I am not going to [reveal anything], but people have gotten very close. So, I don't think it will be very long until it comes out."
That tantalizing hint might be enough to have hardcore fans pulling their hair out, because "people have gotten very close" could mean just about anything. At this point, we have to wonder if the eventual reveal will be disappointing after the years of build-up. Gunn has said he hopes no one ever discovers it, but he also tweeted that there's a small chance he'd spill the truth after Vol. 2 comes out.
We'll keep you posted if he ever reveals the truth, but if that pattern continues, it'll be at least a few more years until we learn about the new reference contained Vol. 2, since he'll likely wait until after Vol. 3 to reveal that one. Unless, of course, one of you sleuths discovers it first. Good luck!
