Who Wants To See A Godzilla-Sized 'Gremlins' Sequel?
A part of the charm of Joe Dante's Gremlins films is how much hell the little monsters raise. They also don't cause massive, destruction porn. If the Gremlins reboot/sequel comes to fruition, will it feel the need to compete with the huge monsters we see today?
According to the original films' star, Zach Galligan, he'd like to see the series go in that direction — and maybe it will. Read more after the jump.
The writer of Gremlins, Chris Columbus (Home Alone), is producing the film, and Galligan recently said Columbus and the studio plan on taking a page from the Jurassic World playbook, by making a reboot/sequel:
It's not going to be a reboot. It will not be a remake in any way, shape, or form. Chris Columbus has come out and said that the first film is very near and dear to his heart and as long as he is alive it will never be remade. So the only thing they will be – and apparently are going to be – doing is something along the lines of like Jurassic World, where it will be 30 years later. I am involved. Initially I remember back in '84-'85 when they approached me and said, do you wanna write the sequel and I said, this is before the obsession with franchises. So my feeling was no. We've told the story, that was that's 1980's thinking. And then suddenly all these years later, we were approached with an idea that really sounded like an interesting version. It's not a remake of the movie at all. It's just a reinvention of it.
Last we heard, Joe Dante was not involved in the Gremlins reboot / prequel, but how cool would it be if the studio got him back to direct a massive Gremlins film? Dante hasn't made a major studio picture since his very overlooked Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and his involvement would certainly make a Gremlins 3 more appealing. The first two films aren't exactly atypical wide-releases – Gremlins 2: The New Batch is wonderfully nuts because the studio didn't care what Dante did — and it'd be great if the sequel/reboot stuck to the spirit of the first two films.
Years ago, Galligan wrote a treatment for the third film, and in an interview with IGN, he shared an idea of his:
Do you know what a fractal is? A fractal is when you have one thing that's a piece, and when you put them together it makes an entire piece. So if you had a little baby pyramid and you put other pyramids together you'd make one big pyramid. So the gremlins [would] all mass together and form one huge gremlin. Kind of like a Godzilla-sized one that bursts out of London knocking over Big Ben and stuff like that.
It wouldn't be surprising if the sequel, which has been on and off again so many times now, went down this road. There's fun to be had in Galligan's idea of Godzilla-sized Gremlins, as costly as it sounds.
