Fish Mooney Will Resurface On 'Gotham' Season 2
Surely you didn't think Gotham had seen the last of Fish Mooney, did you? Sure, the vixenish villainess got a dramatic sendoff at the end of season one – but in superhero shows, as in superhero comics, no character ever really stays gone if they're popular enough. And so Jada Pinkett Smith is set to return as Fish Mooney in season two, as revealed today.
Fox has confirmed to TVLine that Pinkett Smith's Fish Mooney will be back for "multiple" episodes of season two. The character was last seen getting pushed off a warehouse and into a watery grave by her former protégé, Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor). But you can't just put a fish in water and expect it to drown, and you can't expect a beloved supervillain to just drop dead and stay dead. Both Pinkett Smith and Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller have previously hinted that Fish could be back on the show.
"I would definitely not assume anything in a town like Gotham," TVLine quotes Heller as saying last year. "It's very unpredictable, the comic book world." And asked whether Fish was really dead in a season one post-mortem interview, Pinkett Smith teased, "That's for the fans to determine. You saw the ending. She could be and she couldn't be. Who knows? It was an interesting ending."
How and in what form Fish will resurface remains to be seen. It's possible she'll just be back for flashbacks, though the fact that she's involved in multiple episodes suggest something more substantial than a simple cameo. It seems more likely her return will have something to do with the mysterious and ominous Indian Hill facility, run by Hugo Strange (B.D. Wong), as was hinted at in the midseason finale. In any case, Gotham returns to Fox February 29, so we should find out soon enough.
