'Ghostbusters' Animated Movie Finds A Director Whose Work You Saw During Super Bowl 50
Some fans are still reeling from the debut of last week's Ghostbusters trailer, and star Leslie Jones has already responded to some backlash about the portrayal of her character in the first footage from Paul Feig's reboot of the classic franchise. But that's not stopping Sony Pictures from moving full speed ahead with more Ghostbusters entertainment.
The studio has just locked down a director to be at the helm of the developing Ghostbusters animated movie set up at their own Sony Pictures Animation, and while he's not a household name in feature film animation, you undoubtedly saw his work during Super Bowl 50 and countless other times.
THR reports Sony Pictures Animation has hired Fletcher Moules to direct the Ghostbusters animated movie. Moules is the man behind the ongoing series of Clash of Clans commercials, including this Super Bowl ad featuring Liam Neeson:
As well as this Clash of Clans spot featuring Christoph Waltz and James Corden:
These commercials annoy me to no end, mostly because I don't care at all about this game. But at the same time, the animation style is pretty cool, and Moules does seem to have a knack for directing cool action in an animated world. That's exactly the kind of filmmaker that the animated Ghostbusters movie needs.
Other work from Moules also includes some involvement in the creature department for Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, so that's pretty cool. Plus, if you've been to an AMC Theatres location, Moules directed that pre-movie bumper with the little round helicopters dropping off a Coca-Cola into a cuphholder landing dock. You can see a bunch more of his previous work at Fletcher Moules' own website right here.
Ghostbusters co-creator and director Ivan Reitman will act as producer on the movie, but there's still no script for this one just yet. And since this is an animated movie, we're bound to be waiting awhile before we see this one in theaters.
This is all part of Sony Pictures big investment in Ghostbusters that also includes the founding of Ghost Corps, a production banner that has Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd developing movies that all take place within a new Ghostbusters cinematic universe. There's already been talk of another Ghostbusters movie with Anthony & Joe Russo at the helm and Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt as the leads, and if this summer's reboot is successful, you can expect a sequel probably.
Frankly, I think the Ghostbusters animated movie has the potential for a lot of fun, but will it tread the same ground as the original movie and the reboot? It would really need to do something different in order to stand out, but we don't know any of the story details yet, so we'll just have to be patient for now.
