Garrett Hedlund Will Once Again Be Sam Flynn In 'Tron 3'
Anyone who has seen Tron: Legacy saw this one coming from a mile away, but Garrett Hedlund has confirmed that he will be back for Tron 3. Details are scarce but the film is currently undergoing a rewrite over at Disney by screenwriter Jesse Wigutow. The news certainly confirms that the story will continue where we left off in Tron: Legacy, with the son of Flynn bringing a computer program out into the real world and the implications of that. Read more after the jump.
Promoting his latest film, On the Road, Hedlund said the following to NextMovie when asked if he was coming back:
Yeah, are we gonna break this now? Disney's very excited. That's about that. You know, yeah, I'm very excited, Disney's very excited.
Hedlund likely signed on for multiple films when he agreed to star in Tron: Legacy so even if he didn't want to come back, or hasn't seen the script yet, he would be obligated to participate if Disney called in his option. That said, the biggest takeaway here is that he is planning on returning, which suggests Wigutow's script is working for the studio and they're moving forward.
The timing of this likely also has to do with Legacy director Joseph Kosinski nearing completion on his passion project Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise. Kosinski is attached to return for Tron 3. The trailer for Oblivion came out this week and not only turned some heads, but got people talking about Kosinski again. You'd imagine Tron 3 will get a title and green light once Oblivion is done.
Are you excited to see where the Tron story goes with Sam Flynn at the helm? Obviously, they need Olivia Wilde back, but is Jeff Bridges a must as well? Discuss below.
