'Fantastic Beasts' Finds Jon Voight, Gemma Chan, And Carmen Ejogo
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them just keeps digging up more stars. Jon Voight, Carmen Ejogo, and Gemma Chan are the latest to board the Harry Potter spinoff, which stars Eddie Redmayne as the wizarding world's preeminent magizoologist. Wondering what the heck a magizoologist is? You must be a Muggle. More about the latest Fantastic Beasts casting updates after the jump. THR got the scoop on the Fantastic Beasts casting. Chan and Ejogo bring some diversity to what has otherwise been an all-white primary cast. Details on the trio's character are being kept under wraps. Besides Redmayne, Fantastic Beasts stars Katherine Waterston and Alison Sudol as witch sisters Tina and Queenie, Ezra Miller as a wizard named Credence, and Dan Fogler as a Muggle named Jacob. Colin Farrell and Samantha Morton also star.
Set 70 years before the events of the Harry Potter series, the new film follows Newt's adventures in New York, where he travels to discover and document more magical creatures. Scamander collects his findings in his book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which is required reading at Hogwarts by the time Harry gets there. David Yates (of Harry Potter movies 4-8) is directing from an original script by J.K. Rowling.
Voight stars in Showtime's Ray Donovan, which just recently aired its Season 3 finale. He received an Emmy nod for the role in 2014. In addition, he's won one Oscar (for 1979's Coming Home) and been nominated for three more. Ejogo was seen last year in Selma and The Purge: Anarchy, and will next be seen opposite Ethan Hawke in the Chet Baker biopic Born to Be Blue.
Chan has been kicking around British TV and film for nearly a decade, and received some positive notice this summer as the star of AMC's Humans. Her movie résumé includes Richard Ayoade's Submarine and The Double, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and the upcoming thriller Stratton.
Shooting on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them began in August. The film, which is intended to be the start of a new movie franchise, opens in theaters November 18, 2016.
