'Cloverfield 3' Teased By JJ Abrams, Could It Be 'God Particle'?
When the 10 Cloverfield Lane trailer appeared out of nowhere, moviegoers around the world were shocked to find out that JJ Abrams had secretly produced a sequel to Cloverfield. But is it a sequel? Abrams has called the film "a blood relative of Cloverfield" and the common thought is that it its the second film in a series of anthology movies (think Twilight Zone) that share the same thrilling mystery box tone and feel. But now it seems that JJ Abrams already has a third Cloverfield film in mind, if this one does well. Find out about the potential Cloverfield 3 after the jump.
10 Cloverfield Lane producer JJ Abrams gave Entertainment Weekly the following quote:
"I think that would be presumptuous, because we're talking about this movie and comparing it to Cloverfield, but I would be lying if I didn't say there was something else that, if we're lucky enough to do it, could be really cool that connects some stories."
But Abrams is very cautious and it doesn't sound like we'll get a third Cloverfield film unless 10 Cloverfield Lane is a hit, explaining further:
"This is just this movie, and it's only two films that we're talking about right now. There is something else that we'd like to do, and hopefully we'll get a shot."
Now the question is how will the movies connect? Abrams seems to suggest that the stories could connect in some way. Dan Trachtenberg's contained thriller finds a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) waking up from a car accident in the basement of a man (John Goodman) who says he's saved her life from a chemical attack that has left the outside uninhabitable. Of course, Matt Reeves' original Cloverfield has nothing to do with a chemical attack, but instead is about a giant monster who attacks New York City.
The 10 Cloverfield Lane Augmented Reality Game story has tried to connect the two films, but who knows if any of this will be mentioned or play on screen. We know that a lot of the Clvoerfield viral storyline provided fans with backstory and possible explanations, but didn't really connect very much to what occurred in the movie itself.
We know that JJ Abrams is producing the Julius Onah-directed God Particle, which has been in the works since 2012. Paramount recently set for a February 24th 2017 release. The film is about a team of American astronauts on a space station who make a terrifying discovery that "challenges all they know about the fabric of reality, even as they desperately fight for their survival." God Particle is another contained thriller, which like 10 Cloverfield Lane (originally came in as a spec script titled The Cellar) was set up through Bad Robot and Paramount's low budget division Insurge ($5-10 million films).
In the 10 Cloverfield Lane ARG, John Goodman's character Howard Stambler showed up as the employee of the month on the Bold Futura website. Bold Futura is one of the subsidiary companies of the Tagruato Corporation introduced during the 2007 viral/ARG, which was working on the "design, manufacture and integration of advanced technology products for the military, arms manufacturers and space exploration organizations." Also lets not forget the satellite that fell from the sky in the background of the concluding Coney Island scene in Cloverfield.
Recently an audio file was discovered as part of the 10 Cloverfield Lane viral, in a package buried in a farm outside New Orleans. The audio file features a mysterious transmission from the International Space Station.
Is it possible that God Particle could be Cloverfield 3? Might God Particle provide an explanation for the Cloverfield monster and the possible chemical attacks in the United States? Could it be the "Cloverfield Particle"? Or maybe "Space Shuttle Cloverfield"? Seems unlikely as Abrams seems to suggest a third Cloverfield movie would be determined after the release of 10m Cloverfield Lane. God Partical already has a release date and is gearing to begin production. But if it is Cloverfield 3, it seems like JJ Abrams and Bad Robot have been planning this out for a while now, and it could be rather cool.
