Chappie's Family Revealed In Window Cling For Neill Blomkamp's Latest [Comic Con 2014]
After two movies filled with massive sci-fi action, it seems Neill Blomkamp is going a bit more emotional for his latest film. Sony very quietly kicked off the marketing campaign for Chappie at San Diego Comic-Con 2014, with a big banner and a window cling handed to fans as they walked by the booth. Most fans were confused by the swag, which shows a rudimentary drawing of two parents, one holding a gun, alongside a robot. But it's an incredibly intriguing image for the March 2015 release, which stars Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Sharlto Copley as the title character. See the Chappie Comic Con swag and read more below.
Here's the front, and back, of the Chappie window cling handed out at Comic Con
That website just redirects to the film's newly launched Facebook page with this plot description:
After being kidnapped by two criminals during birth, Chappie becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot.
Now, don't forget. This is Neill F'ing Blomkamp we're talking about here. While the set up sounds very much like a family drama with an AI: Artificial Intelligence vibe, I'd bet my hard earned money this film goes from being a heart-breaking story about a young boy robot, into a huge action film ala District 9 or Elysium. Sort of like D.A.R.Y.L. but with a much bigger budget and effects (yes, I just referenced D.A.R.Y.L. I love that movie. I was five.).
Neill Blomkamp's Chappie opens March 6, 2015. It stars Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er, Jose Pablo Cantillo, with Sigourney Weaver and Hugh Jackman. Since Sony has revealed these tiny glimpses of their marketing, I'd imagine we'll start seeing posters, stills and maybe even a trailer as we stretch into the Fall. (Maybe on The Equalizer on September 26?)
What do you think about this early Chappie marketing?
