'Fantastic Four' / 'X-Men' Crossover Is "In Play," Says Bryan Singer
For years fans have wondered if an X-Men / Fantastic Four crossover could happen. Now it sounds like the Fox folks have been wondering the same thing. X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer has said crossover ideas are definitely "in play," though he stopped short of confirming plans outright. Speaking to Yahoo Movies, Singer revealed that there have been conversations about bringing together the Fantastic Four and the X-Men. "Those ideas are in play," he said. "That would be a natural match-up because they're both ensemble films and there is a natural mechanism by which to do it."
While he wouldn't give away what that "natural mechanism" might be, he was happy to serve up a small hint. "It deals with time," he teased. "That's all I'm going to say."
Time travel is nothing new for the X-Men, whose last outing (Days of Future Past) sent them hurtling across decades to stop a dystopian future before hit happened. And they might have to bend time again if they're to hang out with the Fantastic Four. X-Men: Apocalypse is set in the 1980s, whereas Fantastic Four is set more or less in the present.
But before we get ahead of ourselves, Singer points out neither movie is even in theaters yet. "We'll have to see how the films turn out" he said. "To just say you're going to do it would be a mistake, you have to see how the films evolve before you make that decision to completely commit to that."
Unless either film tanks, though, it seems likelier than not that Fox will bring the two film series together at some point. Shared universes are all the rage right now, and Fox is sitting on two very big Marvel properties.
Assuming all goes well, it's worth pointing out that Fox currently has July 13, 2018 reserved for an as-yet-unnamed Marvel movie.
