Brie Larson's 'Captain Marvel' Appears In Marvel Comics, Could Even More MCU Characters Follow?

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are patiently waiting to see what happens next in the interconnected series of comic book movies from Marvel Studios. Following the events of Avengers: Infinity War, there are a lot of questions left to be answered. It doesn't seem like Ant-Man and the Wasp will provide much reprieve from the cliffhanger ending of Marvel's most recent movie. So it's the debut of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel next year that fans are most curious about, and now they have another reason to be excited about the superhero.

Brie Larson's version of Captain Marvel has appeared in the Marvel Comics universe in the lead-up to this summer's Infinity Stone-centric summer comic event. While this might just be a cool comic Easter egg, this could be an indication that more Marvel Cinematic Universe characters will be entering the Marvel Comics universe.

Captain Marvel Reaches Out to All Captain Marvels

One of the lead-ins to the Infinity Stone comic arc is a one-shot tie-in issue called Infinity Countdown: Captain Marvel. In the Marvel Comics universe, the Infinity Stones have made their presence known yet again, and they've all been collected by different superheroes and villains. The Reality Stone has ended up in the hands of the current Captain Marvel, and she uses it to communicate with all the different versions of Captain Marvel in the Marvel Multiverse, and as io9 pointed out, that includes Brie Larson's forthcoming big screen version of the hero.

If you haven't spotted Brie Larson as Captain Marvel in the above image, look towards the upper right hand corner. As you can see, like the rest of the iterations of Captain Marvel shown here, Brie Larson's character has the Reality Stone. Is there any chance that this means the events of Captain Marvel might have something to do with the Reality Stone? That seems unlikely since the Reality Stone lied dormant for five millennia until the events of Thor: The Dark World saw it reemerge, only to have it recovered and given to The Collector for safekeeping.

Since the events of Captain Marvel take place in the 1990s, it's unlikely that the Reality Stone will be involved since it would have still been hidden away. However, it's possible the returning villains Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou) tried to get their hands on another Infinity Stone before their attempts to get the purple Power Stone in Guardians of the Galaxy.

More than likely, this Brie Larson Captain Marvel comic cameo is just a cool way to tease the arrival of the Marvel Studios movie next March. But while this might not be a hint at what's to come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, maybe this is an indication of what's to come in the Marvel Comics universe.

Could More MCU Characters Come to the Comics?

Brie Larson as Captain Marvel isn't the only version of a Marvel Cinematic Universe character to come to Marvel Comics. As we learned back in January, the new version of Valkyrie played by Tessa Thompson in Thor: Ragnarok made her comic debut in the new Marvel Comics title Exiles.

This version of Valkyrie wasn't exactly the same character from the MCU. As writer Saladin Ahmed explained when the news was announced, "She's basically the literalization of the larger-than-her-physical-frame swagger that Tessa Thompson displayed in Thor: Ragnarok, turned up to 11."

That means the version of Captain Marvel played by Brie Larson probably isn't the exactly same as the one from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that doesn't mean that version won't influence another possible iteration of the hero in Marvel Comics. And this could mean that the Marvel Cinematic Universe might start borrowing more elements from the movies for new versions of familiar characters.

With the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe making waves at the box office, incorporating details from the movies into the comics would be a smart way to get more comic readers hooked on the many titles available on shelves.

Captain Marvel comes to theaters on March 6, 2019.
