Vision's 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron' Origin Mirrors The Comics
Minor spoilers for Avengers: Age of Ultron below.
Tuesday, it was finally confirmed what we'd assumed for months. In Marvel Comics, Ultron is created by Hank Pym. In Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron, however, he'll be created by Tony Stark. His original purpose? To lead an army called the Iron Legion against the bad guys, in order to give the Avengers a rest. It does not go well. As for Vision, another character forever linked to these characters and played by Paul Bettany, his origin will be more traditional. Like in the comics, in the film Vision will be created by Ultron "to show he has the power to create life, too."
Entertainment Weekly's latest issue has a huge, detailed article on Avengers: Age of Ultron, with lots of new details. The Vision stuff is some of the newest. Here's the excerpt:
...the Vision, a synthetic, superpowered human designed by Ultron to show he has the power to create life too. (Did we mention Ultron has major daddy issues?) The Vision will be portrayed by Paul Bettany, who has already been a part of the Marvel movie universe as J.A.R.V.I.S., the Siri-like artificial intelligence who serves as Tony Stark's laboratory side kick.
Is that casting coincidental, or can we assume that Ultron uses J.A.R.V.I.S.' consciousness for spare parts in the Vision-ary experiment? Whedon takes a deep breath. We're in spoiler territory. "It's not coincidence," he says, then declines to elaborate.
Considering the EW article talks about Vision (the first time anyone other than Paul Bettany has officially said he's in the movie) and also Ultron, Ultron's origin, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, I think it's a pretty safe bet we'll see all of that and more come next Saturday and Comic-Con 2014. The EW issue is, after all, the Comic-Con preview.
Are you surprised at all that Ultron's origin is different yet Vision's is so similar?
