So Is Max Landis Making An 'American Werewolf In London' Remake Or What? [UPDATED]

It's probably just a matter of time before someone tries to mount a remake of John Landis' An American Werewolf in London, and now there's a rumor floating around that the story is keeping in the family. John Landis' son Max Landis, writer of Chronicle, American Ultra, and Victor Frankenstein, recently shared some cryptic tweets that led fans to wonder if he might be working on an American Werewolf in London remake.

... Except now he's already gone back on the record to categorically deny everything. So what's going on with the American Werewolf in London remake? Let's walk through the recent developments below.

Landis himself got the rumor mill churning on Twitter, teasing plans to remake one of his father's films. He's since deleted the original message, but here it is preserved as a screenshot.

Landis did not say which of his dad's movies he wanted to remake, and his dad has a great many movies to his name including Animal House, The Blues Brothers, Trading Places, Three Amigos, Coming to America, and Beverly Hills Cop III. However, Bloody Disgusting has asked around and believes he's referring to An American Werewolf in London. There may even be a clue in Landis' own tweets from last month.

Could "Moors" be a codename for An American Werewolf in London, in reference to the famous line "stay off the moors"?

Granted, this is all just speculation at this point. But it doesn't seem like that much of a stretch. Landis clearly has an affection for the source material and in fact he's kinda-sorta done an American Werewolf remake already.

However, Landis himself flatly denies that an American Werewolf in London remake is among his upcoming projects.

So what's going on here? Well, it could be that Landis is being entirely honest: that he is remaking one of his father's films, but not An American Werewolf in London as many (including ourselves) have speculated today. Which of course raises the question of which film he's talking about then. Or perhaps he is doing an American Werewolf remake, but he's getting ahead of himself or just not allowed to talk about it yet. He wouldn't be the first filmmaker to issue a false denial if that's the case.

For what it's worth, an American Werewolf in London remake was in the works at Dimension Films a few years back, with Sean and Bryan Furst producing. Not much came of those efforts, but it's definitely possible someone is trying again. According to Bloody Disgusting, Universal now has the rights. The studio is already developing a Wolf Man reboot to fit into its newly revamped Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe, but maybe they've got room in their stable for a different werewolf remake.
