'A Field In England' Teaser: A Psychedelic Grindhouse Collage
As we've said before, Ben Wheatley is among the most interesting genre directors working right now. Kill List was a wild thriller, but also a fantastic explosion of ideas of masculinity and impotence; Sightseers is a fantastically funny, bloody comedy that also plays with the extreme results of frustrated creative impulses.
His next film is A Field in England, a fairly small production about a few guys who flee the front lines of the English Civil War in the mid-1600s. They're captured by two men, one of whom is an alchemist, and pressed into assisting in the search for a treasure. But that treasure may in fact be something that drives them totally crazy (at least for a while).
This new teaser really ups the psychedelic factor — it is an almost assaultive collage of color, sound, and shapes. For the audience that is already pre-disposed to respond to a film like this, the trailer is going to be pure crack.
A Field in England opens in the UK on July 5, and Drafthouse Films will release it in the US later this year.
England during the English Civil War. A small group of deserters flee from a raging battle through an overgrown field. They are captured by two men: O'Neil and Cutler. O'Neil (Michael Smiley), an alchemist, forces the group to aid him in his search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field. Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that the treasure might be something other than gold, they slowly become victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field.
