2018 Critics Choice Awards Winners: 'The Shape Of Water' Wins Big
Even though there appears to be a growing rift between critics and audiences, ridiculously and confusingly perpetuated by Rotten Tomatoes of all places, there are plenty who are still interested in what the critics have to say and understand the value they bring to the entertainment world.
Last night, the critics named what they thought were the crowning achievements in film and television with the 2018 Critics Choice Awards. On the film side, The Shape of Water and Guillermo del Toro came out on top, winning both Best Director and Best Motion Picture Drama. In television, The Handmaid's Tale was named the Best Drama Series while Amazon made waves again with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as Best Comedy Series.

One thing I love about the Critics Choice Awards is that they have separate categories for genre films such as comedy, action and sci-fi/horror. However, being nominated for one doesn't necessarily preclude them from being included in the overall Best Picture category, which is unlike the Golden Globes, where a movie can only be a comedy/musical or a drama but not both. The Big Sick, Get Out, The Shape of Water and Lady Bird all crossed over from the individual genre categories to get nominated for Best Picture. It's a shame the Oscars or Golden Globes will never go this route.
However, this does create some discrepancies in the awards. Both Get Out and The Shape of Water were nominated for Best Picture and Best Sci-Fi or Horror Movie. The Shape of Water won the overall Best Picture but Get Out beat the Guillermo del Toro film for Best Sci-Fi or Horror Movie, which doesn't make much logistical sense. Shouldn't The Shape of Water have wont that award too?
As for the major acting awards, they fell right in line with many of the previous awards and predictions. Frances McDormand won Best Actress for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri while Gary Oldman won Best Actor for Darkest Hour. Unless there's some big shake-up in The Academy, that's likely how the Oscars will fall as well. Even though the nominations aren't out yet, the two are shoo-ins to get a nod, and they'll both likely win.
On the more controversial side of the acting awards, James Franco came away with the award for Best Actor in a Comedy for his role in The Disaster Artist. He also won the Golden Globe, but since that first win, several sexual misconduct allegations have come up against the actor Presumably, the ballots for the Critics Choice Awards were already in before the allegations came out, otherwise he might not have been named the winner. This could (and should) shake up his chances at coming away with an Oscar.
Anyway, here are all the 2018 Critics Choice Awards winners from the film side (winners in bold)

TELEVISION
On the television side, The Handmaid's Tale took the big prize as Best Drama Series, just as it did at the Emmys last year. But Amazon was the big winner in comedy with their new series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which also landed Rachel Brosnahan the award for Best Comedy Actress. There was also a surprise winner in the form of Ted Danson for Best Comedy Actor in The Good Place, who wasn't even nominated an Emmy (which was a huge mistake).
Otherwise, here's the full list of television nominees.
