Here's How You Can Watch Spoiler Alert At Home

2022 was something of a landmark year for mainstream queer cinema. Films like "Fire Island," "Crush," and "Anything's Possible" painted a far more authentic and inclusive mosaic of the 2SLGBTQ+ community than the movies with mostly white cisgender casts — many of which, as moving as they are, feature straight actors playing queer characters — that have come before them, while at the same time broadening their focus beyond the typical queer issues and "tragic" stories Hollywood typically fixates on. Of course, there's always going to be room for fresh stories centered on plain ol' white queer guys, and 2022 had us covered there too, with romantic dramedies like "Bros" and "Spoiler Alert."

The latter movie, which flew under a lot of people's radars judging by the box office returns, is based on Michael Ausiello's 2017 memoir "Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies" and explores the real-life romance between its author (played by Jim Parsons) and his late husband, Kit Cowan (Ben Aldridge). /Film's own Sarah Bea Milner had kind things to say about the film in her review, calling it "a moving, beautiful love story that transcends its 'niche' subject-matter; this isn't just a queer love story, its a human love story, and you don't need to be a cisgender gay white man from New York City to relate."

If you're among the many moviegoers who missed "Spoiler Alert" in theaters, then fear not! We've got the goods on its home media and streaming release.

Where is Spoiler Alert streaming?

If you're not interested in picking up "Spoiler Alert" on Blu-ray ("they said without an ounce of judgment ... okay, maybe just a sliver of judgment"), you could instead stream the movie on Peacock starting February 3, 2023. "Spoiler Alert" has also been available to rent or buy on digital platforms like Vudu for a while, so there are other options if neither of those sounds appealing.

Speak of the devil, NBCUniversal's streaming platform continued to bleed billions of dollars in cash in 2022 and is expected to lose even more in 2023. Whichever way it fares in the next stage of the streaming wars, Peacock now houses an eclectic pack of lesser-seen 2022 releases from Universal and Focus Features, with "Spoiler Alert" soon to join the ranks of "She Said" and the Best Picture contender "TÁR," as well as the aforementioned "Bros." Couple that with the arrival of Rian Johnson's "Poker Face" and the streamer boasts a whole lot more bang for your buck than it did at the top of 2022. If you've been holding out on getting a subscription, this feels like a decent time to reconsider.

Spoiler Alert hits Blu-ray in February

For the physical media fiends out there, "Spoiler Alert" will release on Blu-ray on February 7, 2023, per the official announcement from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Sadly, however, the film will be relatively light on special features. Save for an exclusive featurette titled "Spoiler Alert: From Memoir to Movie," the Blu-ray won't include much in the way of extras beyond the customary deleted scenes.

To be fair, "Spoiler Alert" is a modestly-budgeted, character-driven, romantic dramedy, so the real-life events that inspired it are likely the most interesting behind-the-scenes element of the entire movie. (No shade to the film's production crew; you folks rule!) Such was also the case with director Michael Showalter's Oscar-nominated 2017 dramedy "The Big Sick" and his Oscar-winning 2021 drama "The Eyes of Tammy Faye," both of which were based on true stories themselves. Still, one imagines the "From Memoir to Movie" feature could make for an insightful compliment to both the movie and Michael Ausiello's original book, so that alone might well merit picking up the Blu-ray.
